IEPs provide numerous benefits to the student, some of these benefits are:

1. Provides a chance for academic success.

Because they typically don't learn in the same way as other students, many students with special needs are at a disadvantage in standard learning environments. IEPs provide SEN students an alternative path with high-quality programs that are adapted to their particular needs.

2. Has a reliable structure and plan of action

Everyone involved can understand what to anticipate, what will be taught, and what goals are being pursued thanks to an IEP. Parents can feel at peace knowing that the educators follow a curated path to their children's academic success.

3. Focuses on measurable goals

Goals are broken down into smaller components to make it easier for students with SEN to achieve, giving them a sense of pride and confidence in themselves. IEP goals are SMART goals. These objectives define what a student should strive for and offer reasonable time frames to do so.

4. Is strength-based

Students are taught through different approaches - ones that work well with them. The plan is also unique, as it does not only focus on a student's academic growth. Social-emotional goals can also be focused on. These also usually accompany academic goals for guaranteed encompassing learning.

5. Ensures individual student care

Individualized student care is an additional benefit of IEPs. The needs of these pupils can be met and attended to, one by one. With individualized care, more targeted performance assessments, and one-on-one interaction between students and teachers, when these pupils have similar worries, teachers are able to identify them and offer sensible solutions.

Despite the numerous advantages to IEPs they have their challenges, some of which are:

1. Collaboration

It might be challenging to reach an agreement among a group of individuals who each provide a different focus to the team.It can even may be be difficult to get everyone to agree at first on what the pupil is capable of.

2. Challenging but attainable goals

A real issue is setting idealistic goals. Sometimes we have to change our goals because they are too difficult for the learner to achieve or perhaps they'll learn them before we anticipate.

3. Implementing the IEP

Having to implement the IEP in a meaningful way across the student’s school day can be a challenge. Unforeseen issues or other conflicts may arrise. Relating the goals to the students interests could also provide a challenge creating difficulties in implementing the IEP.
