Originally proposed by Davis (1986), the original version of the model states that a user's decision to adopt a new form of technology depends on its perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and attitude toward using it (as cited by Granić & Marangunić, 2019, p. 2574).

1) The first modified version of the model added external variables into the equation of technology adoption. Every other component of the original model (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and attitude toward using it) remained the same.

2) The second modified version of the model removed the attitudes toward using it due to the impact of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as they were found to have a "direct influence on behavior intention" (Lai, 2017, p. 27).

3) The third version, TAM2, incorporates how users think about how the new system will affect their goals at work and how they will have consequences by using it (Venkatesh & Davis, 2000, as cited by Lai, 2017, p. 27).

4) The fourth version, TAM3, combines TAM2 and the model of the determinants of perceived ease of use (Lai, 2017, p. 27). Additional components include computer anxiety, computer playfulness, computer self-efficacy, and perceptions of external control, perceived enjoyment, and object usability (Venkatesh & Bala, 2008 as cited by Lai,2017, p. 27).

Elements of the Original TAM Model

The original TAM model (Davis 1986) contained these three elements:

Perceived Usefulness - This has to do with how useful users think the new technology will be once it is implemented. The way they perceive the new technology is important because if they do not think it will be useful, the probability of them accepting it is slim to none.

Perceived Ease of Use - This has to do with how easy users think the new technology will be to use. This is also important because the new technology has got to be easy and efficient for users. You do not want it to make things more difficult.

Attitude Toward Using - This has to do with the user's attitude toward the new technology. Do they have a positive or negative attitude about it?

Brief Comment about the Model

From my experience, when thinking about implementing new technology, one should not take that lightly. New technology is a major change for any organization. The user experience cannot be overlooked or forgotten. I chose this model because I agree with its components and how powerful they are during technology implementations. Users must find the new technology useful and easy to use. When these two components are present, it helps users to have a positive attitude about it. In the corporate arena, users are busy and need access to technology that will make their jobs easier and more efficient. They need to be able to consume training content in their own way, on their own time so they can experience minimum disruption to their daily jobs. Implementations should not be taken lightly! Technology implementations have many components to them and they require a thorough pre-assessment of organizational and user needs. I think this model has critical components to a successful implementation. Even though the original version may seem basic, it is very powerful.
