Built in 1591 to house the novices interested in religious life, the convent was erected by two Franciscan friars, Friar Antonio dos Mártires and Friar Antonio das Chagas, commanded by the Superior of Order in Brazil and at the request of Vasco Fernandes Coutinho - the son. In the Colonial period, the building was home to about 16 students, and it housed 25 novices in the year 1765. The kitchen was one of the first to receive piped water from the aqueduct that collected water from the forests of Fonte Grande.

Curiosity: This place of cemetery was requested due to a high incidence of deaths due to malaria and cholera and today in the patio of the Convent has a Monument with Our Lady Immaculate Conception that was built by the city of Vitória with an urn with all the bones that were unearthed period. The remains of the Jesuit Pedro Palacios can also be inside this urn since it was brought from Vila Velha to this place, however there are no records if it really is there or inside the chapel!

Curiosity: There were two brotherhoods who were devotees of St. Benedict who met in the Convent of St. Francis (Franciscans, Merchants, people with high purchasing power) and the Brotherhood of the Church of the Rosary (Negros) and as there was only one image it was shared by a period of six months with each brotherhood, but in 1832 the Convent did not allow the image to leave the place and thus began a great rivalry with the right to "steal the image" by one of the brotherhoods and nicknames among them! The brotherhood of the Convent was nicknamed Caramuru by the brothers of the Church of the Rosary, and they associated with the fish Caramuru that looks like a serpent, and not to let that pass the Brotherhood of the Convent nicknamed the Brothers of the Church of the Rosary of Peroás alluding to the fish that had a blue stripe was found in abundance and worthless!
