Here is a letter to a friend inspired by the Caldecott winner Owl Moon.
As I am reading Owl Moon I cannot help to think of my grandfather. When I was young he would push me in a wheel borrow and we would search for Horned Toads. Just like in Owl Moon we never knew if we would be able to see one or not. This is my most fond memory of my grandfather something that makes me smile as I write. The connection between the boy and his father reminded me of mine and my grandfather. Not many words were spoken but just enough to know what the other was thinking. This story has brought me much joy and allowed me to think of the joyous times I had with my grandfather.

Defining Quote for the Pura-Belpre Award Winner under the mesquite.
“I can’t imagine what it must be like for you. But I know you’ll make it through. You’ve come this far. Don’t shut down now. Maybe you could take that pain, energy, and use it to become someone else for a while. It won’t change what’s happening at home, but it might help you cope with it.” pg 160
This quote reminds me that everyone has their own struggles and hardships in life. It reminds me that we all must be strong for ourselves and the people around us. Coping makes us strong, something we must be in this world. In this story Lupita has taken on a lot of responsibilities while her mother is sick with cancer. While home life is hard so is school. There are people who remind her to stay strong because things can only get better for the amazing Lupita.

Book Recommendation for the Realistic Fiction book Firebird.
Firebird is an inspirational story for anyone who has ever felt out of place or uninspired to pursue their love or passion. In this story you see kindness from others to remind us to always help those around us. A few simple gestures can change someone’s life forever. You are reminded to continue doing what you love even if you are not fantastic at first. Hard work, dedication, and positivity allow you to create your dream come true. I recommend this book for anyone who might feel down about their future goals. I mostly recommend Firebird for children so they know learning and growing are all part of life. They too can overcome their fear and live a life they love continuing their passions.

Roller Girl written by Victoria Jamieson was a Bluebonnet winner and is also considered a graphic novel. This book is about a girl named Astrid who becomes fascinated by roller derby. Astrid decides to go to a summer roller derby camp without her best friend Nicole. Nicole and Astrid had been best friends for years and suddenly they began to drift apart. During this time Astrid feels lost without her best friend and unsure of herself. She decides to continue her dream of becoming a roller girl and starts derby camp that summer. Astrid does not realize how intense this camp actually is and is immediately intimidated by these girls skills. Along the way Astrid over comes many obstacles within herself and even makes a new friend. With extra practice and some encouragement from a roll model she gets through summer camp and even gets to play in the roller derby bout. Astrid is a good roll model for kids who are trying something new. This book shows that Astrid is pushed outside of her comfort zone and happily succeeds at becoming a roller girl. With hard work, time, dedication, friendships, positivity, and a few tears anything is possible. I loved this book and would recommend it for children and my future students.

Book recommendation over the Bluebonnet award winner Cook-A-Doodle-Doo. Cook-A-Doodle-Doo is a great story book for children. In this story you see team work. Together Rooster and her friends bake a strawberry shortcake. To do this they all work together helping one another and never discriminating the other for being confused. They each play an important role in the baking of the cake. My favorite part about the book is the margins on the sides of the story telling you exactly what measurement tool is what and explaining it in detail. I recommend this book to a classroom that was learning about measurements. This could really help a student visualize the process of baking.

Letter a teacher over the Historical Fiction book Pop's Bridge
An interesting story based on the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. The family in the story is fictional though based on the real families of that time. The little boy is so proud of his father for being a steelworker on the bridge; the boy thinks this is the best job of them all! But his best friend's father is a painter, a very important job, too (though our protagonist doesn't want to recognize that.) When, one day, an accident happens on the bridge, the boy realized that all the men working on the bridge are equally important, taking risks to build a marvel. I like the idea behind the story and think it's a very interesting one. I've seen the Golden Gate Bridge many times and even walked across it. It is definitely marvelous! For some reason, though, this book just didn't really bring all of that to life in the way I would have hoped and I failed to really become emotionally involved in the story being told. I did like that the boy's friend is Chinese-American as that is definitely an important component of San Francisco, then and now. And the ending is nice, a sweet idea though a bit contrived.

Nefali is a deep thinker and has few friends to enjoy life with. His father was a very controlling man. He did not approve of Neftali’s passion to write he believed Neftali would become a doctor or dentist. There are many instances that you see the father put down or discriminate his son for the love he had for others and writing. In this story you see Neftali overcome all of his fears and become the famous poet he always dreamed of being.
