The Director refers to the knowledge of an individual as in a way detrimental to society. Which in a way it could be IF the power is pointed for wrong reasons. He feels that if one single person becomes corrupted it could result in many, which then in his eyes justifies the idea of murder, like taking out the bad egg from the carton will make the society seemingly better. But then again the New World doesn't believe in the "individual". He wants Foster to look at the concept as the sacrifice for something greater with no emotions involved.

I believe that the "common good" of society is referring to a person's individuality. When Huxley asks "what is an individual?" I believe he is asserting a person's free thought and action from others.

The quote demonstrates how one individual can have a dramatic effect on others. However, he speaks of this in a negative way in the sense that one corrupt individual can destroy society. In reality, one individual can make a difference in the world in a positive way

The question the director ask really presents a great point on what really an individual means. But the question he doesn't ask is when it actually comes to an individual how is that individual perceived by the society. It's there that we reach questions on the basic humanity of the society.
