People who acknowledge many genders have existed for a very long time in populations all throughout the world, from central Africa to South America to the Pacific Islands and beyond. For instance, the Kama Sutra quotes the hijra of Pakistan and India from 2,000 years ago. They recognized gender-variant people as shamans and healers in their tribes, and it wasn't until the introduction of colonialism that they were taught otherwise. Indigenous American cultures each have their own names, although most use the umbrella phrase "two-spirit."

The idea of gender being fluid has been around for over 2,000 years. Individuals didn't start using labels till the introduction of colonialism. Women presented themselves as men so they could fight in the US Civil War. After the war, most resumed their lives as women, but some, like Albert Cashier, continued to live as men.
