Deutsch identifies two types of goal interdependence; positive interdependence means that both sides can attain their goals by achieving the other side's goals, whereas negative interdependence means that both sides can achieve their goals by not achieving the other side's goals.
The style of negotiation used in a given situation is based on rational criteria. However, the personalities of the parties involved may also influence the style used.

Morton Deutsch's theory of cooperation and competition predicts that a competitive approach to conflict will result in less effective communication, less friendly, less productive discussions and less cooperation in a group. Cooperative processes are more likely to lead to an agreement on the problem.
When parties disagree, the parties do not believe that the other party can solve the conflict, and therefore feel the need to check each other's work. When the parties do not check each other's work, they feel the need to use coercive tactics to resolve the conflict.
Although Deutsch paints a very negative picture of competition, other theorists emphasize that competition in sports can be constructive.
