• Great barrier reef is the world's largest coral reef system located off the coast of Queensland

• The relation between the great barrier reef and ADANI project is basically -> Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s coal project got approved (in Queensland) -> Queensland is where The GBR is located -> The project will mine 10 mil tonnes of coal/year from the Galilee Basin -> build a 200-kilometres rail (called Carmichael Rail Network) connecting to an existing railway, before exporting the coal out of Adani’s port on the Queensland coast -> container ships pass through the GBR to India where they will burn the fossil fuels -> but the root cause of warmer oceans and damaged reefs are the burning of fossil fuels *forehead slap -> the company’s Australian chief said the project had “opportunity to be able to grow” to 60 million tonnes a year -> this makes it even harder to maintain the world's already hot temperature of 1.5°C.

• But the no.1 concern from the people who actually cares for the future of the Reef is the prospect that the Adani mine will be just the first of five/six other coal mines that will look to exploitation in the Galilee Basin. Among those miners with interest is GVK Hancock which is owned by another Indian billionaire, GVK Reddy.

The Adani Carmichael Mine and Rail Project, located in Queensland, Australia, is managed by Bravus Mining & Resources, a subsidiary of the Adani Group. Initially approved in 2014, the project faced scaling back from 60 million tonnes to 10 million tonnes annual coal production due to financial hurdles. Construction began in 2019 with the first coal shipment exported by December 2021. The project has faced significant environmental and legal challenges, particularly concerning impacts on local water resources, endangered species, and greenhouse gas emissions. It has also been controversial for its economic benefits and use of taxpayer funding.

Protesters are worrying that Adani will potentially unlock one of the biggest untouched coal reserves in the world which will lead to at least 8 more coal mines to be built. Which will heavily impact the atmosphere.

1. What is the Adani Group's coal project.

   • The size of Victoria and contains one of the world's largest untapped deposits of thermal coal. The mine, which is proposed by Adani Mining (a subsidiary of India's Adani Group), is meant to be a keystone project for the Indian company's so-called "pit-to-plug" strategy of owning coal mines to feed its power plants in India.
