Berlin Germany: The Berlin Wall

People living in East Berlin hated living under communism. About 3 million East Germans fled to West Berlin seeking better lives and political freedom. But the East German government did not like it, and wanted to put a stop to the escapes. In August 1961, East Germany built a 103 mile wall between East and West Berlin. The wall became guarded by Soviet troops, and it became a symbol of the split between East and West Berlin.

The Vietnam War

In the early 1960's the U.S became involved in the Vietnam War. Vietnam was divided into north and south Vietnam. The norther part of Vietnam was controlled by communists, and they were trying to take over south Vietnam. A lot of people thought that if southern Vietnam became communist, then it would spread over all of southeast Asia and it would all be under communist control. This was called the ''Domino Theory.'' Then the U.S decided to send help to south Vietnam and put a stop to the spreading communism. The war came to an end when they had a cease-fire agreement. The U.S troops withdrew from the country in 1973. Then North Vietnam took over the south for good. Now Vietnam is one country under communist rule.

Collapse of The USSR

The Collapse of The USSR started in the latest 1980's it was complete when the country broke up into 15 independent states on December 25th of 1991. This caused the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States to end.

Cuban Missile Crisis

In the year 1962 the U.S discovered that the Soviet Union had built launching pads for missiles in Cuba. Because of this the Cuban Missile Crisis began. President JFK told the U.S Navy to block any Soviet Union ships that were carrying missiles to Cuba. Troops were also sent to Florida in case they needed to invade Cuba. People worried that a nuclear war might begin. Then, after 13 days, the Soviet said that they would remove their launching pad and missiles, if the U.S didn't invade Cuba. The United States government agreed and the world breathed a sigh of relief.

September 11th (9/11)

On the morning of September 11th, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes and making two of them fly into the twin towers and crash, killing hundreds to thousands of people. The third plane crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington DC. People on the fourth plane fought against the terrorists, and the plane crashed in an open area in Pennsylvania. People think that this plane was possibly headed for the White House, but it did not reach its intended destination because of the plane's brave passengers. A1 Qaeda is a terrorists group, and they were behind the plane attack on 9/11.

McCarthy and Khrushchev

Who is McCarthy and Khrushchev? Well Joseph McCarthy was the senator for the state of Wisconsin and Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of the Soviet Union. Lots of Americans believed that McCarthy was protecting the safety of the country. He was a very powerful name. People were afraid to call him out. After Joseph Stalin died Nikita took over First Secretary of the Communist Party.

Harry Truman

There were many things that Harry Truman did after WW2. A major issue he had to deal with was the Soviet Union and communism. The Soviet Union had become a major power and wanted to spread communism throughout the world. Truman helped to create the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with Canada and Western Europe. These countries would help to protect each other from the Soviet Union. This also started the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
With the spread of communism, wars began to start in other parts of the world. Truman sent U.S. troops to Korea to fight in the Korean War. He also sent aid to Vietnam.

Mikhail Gorbachev

Mikhail Gorbachev graduated from college in 1955 Gorbachev first worked as a member Communist Youth Organization. He became the leader of the division in stavrpool. In 1961 he was selected to be the delegate for Stavropol at the 22nd Communist Party Congress in Moscow. For the next 7 years Mikhail was the leader of the Communist Youth Organization.

Winston Churchill

After WW2, Winston Churchill's party lost the election and he was no longer Prime Minister. However he was still a major leader in the government. He was again elected Prime Minister in 1951. Churchill was concerned about the Soviet Union. He felt they were just as dangerous as Hitler now that the Germans were defeated. He was right as soon after WW2 ended, the Cold War between the Western nations of NATO (such as Britain, France, USA) and communist Soviet Union began.

Fidel Castro

In July of 1959 Castro took over as leader of Cuba. Castro had become a follower of Marxism and he used this philosophy in creating a new government for Cuba. The government took over much of the industry. They also took control of many businesses and farms owned by Americans. Freedom of speech and of the press was also severely limited. Opposition to his rule was generally met with imprisonment and even execution. Many people fled the country. The United States tried several times to remove Castro from power. This included the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961 ordered by President JFK. In this invasion, around 1,500 Cuban exiles trained by the CIA attacked Cuba. The invasion was a disaster with the majority of the invaders captured or killed.

Ronald Reagan

For many years the United States had been in a "Cold War" with the Soviet Union. Both countries had the atomic bomb and were considered the two Super Powers of the world. Each side was scared if the other decided to drop the bomb, what would happen. When Ronald Reagan became president, he was determined to make the U.S. stronger than the Soviet Union. However, in 1985 when Mikhail Gorbachev became leader of the Soviet Union, Reagan saw an opportunity for peace. The two leaders agreed to reduce their stockpile of nuclear missiles. Reagan is famous for his speech at the Berlin Wall where he said to Gorbachev "Mr. Chairman, tear down this wall". Two years later, in 1989, the Berlin Wall, separating communist East Germany from democratic West Germany, was torn down. The Cold War was over.
