Use Padlet 5 to suggest a DMIL activity, for your chosen group, that is delivered any way other than a ‘class’, for example:
a short video (YouTube, Bilibili etc); a game (digital or otherwise); an app; some sort of practical ‘on the job’ activity; any other approach which does not require a teacher to be in the room.

I think the target audience for this video is the first-year students at the University of Manchester, who is not familiar with the library services. This video is just four minutes long, but through the narrative presentations from real library staff, as well as interviewing students on campus who have sought help from library staff about their feelings and their experiences, target audience can quickly obtain information about library services, and then, because they are inspired by the real successful experiences of their predecessors, they are more likely to actually use these services.
(Rou Lyu)

A web app and mail-based intervention designed to promote eHealth Literacy skills in older learners

[John-Paul Mills]

Across the literature on eHealth Literacy in older adults, many interventions follow a formal/teacher-centred pedagogy or a individual/learner-centred pedagogy, both of which often occur in a classroom setting (Rasi et al., 2021). It can be argued that this is likely due to a teacher being seen as the essential element in supporting learners with 'conventional' or 'content' literacy with regards to using an Internet-enabled device to seek health information.

However, as an example of an intervention which went beyond the classroom setting, Manafo & Wong (2012) studied older adults' use of eSEARCH - an online eHealth search tool designed to build eHealth Literacy skills and confidence in older persons. Its core functionality involves guiding users through questions which helps the tool present pathways to the user to help them search for information that is relevant to them. It mimicked an open web search, but was highly simplified in its interface, and navigation. eSEARCH was supplemented with mail-sent resources including a factsheet on eHealth Literacy, a guide to older adults' information-seeking behaviour and a case-study that learners had to work through. There was also an eHealth Literacy Assessment Scale provided for learners to report on their experience.

The design of eSEARCH in i) being accessible remotely and ii) being designed for independent study should be recognised for its attempt at solving the problem of helping older persons become more informationally literate and digitally literate concurrently. The tool itself took the burden of promoting a 'conventional' digital literacy by its simulation of an open search (thus no formal instruction was needed), but in truth keeping learners within fairly narrow parameters. Everything was learner-paced. Furthermore, the supplementary materials promoted a more 'emergent' form of information literacy in how they encouraged learners to identify the impact and of eHealth Literacy in the older population.

I'm really interested in the potential for interventions like these which promote IL/DL using platforms/apps which are 'sandbox' environments for simulating real-world information searching practices.

Manafò, E. and Wong, S., 2013. eSEARCH©: A tool to promote the eHealth literacy skills of older adults. Journal of Consumer Health on the Internet, 17(3), pp.255-271.

Rasi, P., Vuojärvi, H. and Rivinen, S., 2021.

“What is Media Literacy?” By Simone Wagner.
Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD9jhj6tM50

This is very short video that introduces about media literacy. It is a thesis project for Design and Technology at Parsons School of Design Spring 2014 produced by Simone Wagner. I would like to recommend it for secondary school students because the video is very easy to follow and understand for someone who has never heard of media literacy. The video is only two and a half minute which is not too long for students to lose their attention. The producer tries to make the design more interesting and interactive by adopting a multimedia learning approach which combines narration and animation together to deliver the information through both verbal and pictorial channels to provide the students better explanation on the subject matter. The video gives some practical questions that students can ask themselves when they encounter media message. However, the video does not give any concrete definitions or frameworks . So, I think it can be used as an entry video to introduce the idea of being media literate and raise the student’s interest about this field. There are other types of educational video about media literacy on YouTube that are good resources to refer as an informal learning environment which is very cost efficient for teachers and flexible in time for students to watch at any time they want.

the aim would be to provide a short video that could be used to stimulate debate around information literacy. The starting point would be with with JJ Gibson's initial conceptualisation of the concept through Norman's application of it to the design function, to EJ Gibson's interpretation of JJ Gibson's initial conceptualisation.....confusing isnt it. The core issue would be how did the nature of the concept evolved and change through these different lenses and what does it mean for learing and the affordances of techology? The ultimate goal would be the generation of an analytical framework that allows for the analysis of affordances to be carried out. The video would provide an asyncronous means of delivering material that could then form the basis of group-based discussion.

Gibson, J. J. 1979. The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception. I think the activities of self-motivated learning or topic free exploration by using this function is a good idea, because of below reasons:

1. Weibo is the biggest Chinese social media. When students use super topic community to explore their topic by themselves, they will receive huge amount of related news and people’s comments.

Activity: Enjoy a day without digital staff with your children.
Aim: The activity is designed for the parents and their children to experience how digitial staffs influence their life. Since in most of the time, digital staffs cannot be removed in the relationship between parents and students, it is a good chance for them to know what their relationship might be without digitial techonoolgy. Therefore, they can figure out how digitial technology can be properly used in this relationship.
Detail: The parents and children will be asked to forbid smartphone, ipad or comuputer use in that day. They can have their own plans of that day. And the parents should spend their time with the children, so weekend or holiday would be preferred.

I have found a video in which a mum introduced some tips that she suggested for the children to entertain themselves without technology. Some of the activities are inspiring that may develop into a training of parents.
Here is the link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTowHOXpb5M
Yuanqi Li

The idea of this online game is to teach early teens how to be good digital citizens . The idea of digital citizenship is basically taking the same ideas or attributes of being a good 'citizen' within society and transferring this into a digital context. So for example being a good digital citizen would mean following the law by not doing anything illegal online e.g. pirating movies; it can also mean knowing how to stay safe e.g. not accepting friend requests from unknown persons or it can also mean not signing up to websites etc. without reading the terms and conditions. These are just a few examples.

In this game called 'Digital Compass' by Common Sense Media you are can play as different characters, who you have to help make the right choices in order to be a good digital citizen and be responsible online etc. It's a fun way to see how in our modern technological age, digital literacy plays a big part and knowing the necessary skills to navigate the digital landscape it more essential than ever!

Here's the link: https://www.digitalcompass.org/game/index.html

Gareth Drabble

This video mainly educates the public to assess the authority and opinions of the individual or organization providing the information. Put forward three considerations for judging whether an individual or an organization is authoritative. First, check the author or the author’s professional background to determine whether he is really qualified to speak on a topic. Second, check how they generated this information-face-to-face interviews? Questionnaire? If it is a news organization, does it disclose news ethics, philosophy and methodology? Third, use a system that can correct them even if they find errors, for example, check whether there are comments that correct the errors. Check whether you have taken the wrong report seriously and corrected it (why reported the error and what adjustments have been made to avoid the same problem).

In addition, the video also suggests that there is no need to rush to deny the views of individuals in the information. But when words such as opinion, analysis, perspective, viewpoint, etc. appear, they should be convincing, not just provide information.

Formal news headlines generally do not carry personal opinions, but there are personal tendencies in informal environments such as videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o93pM-b97HI

NA TANG

Set the game scene: 3 members belong to a librarian team, but it's ten minutes before they get off work today.
2. Rules of the game: the librarian team should drag and drop the books to the correct order according to the bookshelf number before work.
3. Once the countdown starts, the shelf number will appear at the bottom of the book picture.

Dishi Tang

Now there is a lot of information in the network world, and these information are fragmented. When students are faced with such a large amount of information, they need to do the following: first, they need to select useful information. Then there is the need to filter out useless or even harmful information. Only in this way can students make the most of their time on the Internet.
So far, the best way I can think of is to slow down access to information. Don't rush to get information, such as tiktok short video platform, will waste students a lot of time. The channel for students to obtain information or knowledge should be to read the literature and works recognized by the academic community.

NIYI WEI

This is the video I chose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIA3ZNsUhhQ
During the last group study day, someone in my chose group brought up a health literacy activity related to Covid-19.
It occurred to me that during the epidemic, many people had a lot of questions about the vaccine and this video provided a brief introduction to the current status and principles of the mRNA vaccine, which had a relatively obvious and effective educational impact on the general public. It would be perfect for showing and promoting in the community.

The Internet is an incredible resource for news and information, but unfortunately not everything online is trustworthy. Fake news is any article or video containing untrue information disguised as a credible news source. While fake news is not unique to the Internet, it has recently become a big problem in today’s digital world.

Fake news typically comes from sites that specialize in bogus or sensationalized stories. It tends to use provocative headlines, like "Celebrity endorses not brushing teeth" or "Politician selling toxic waste on the black market". These headlines can seem suspicious or even unbelievable to the point of being silly, making it tempting to think of fake news as harmless.

Fengjie Mei
