Following World War II, Western Europe was a democratic and capitalist region. They received financial assistance from America under the Marshall Plan. To halt the Soviets, France, the United Kingdom, and West Germany joined NATO in 1949. During the Economic Miracle of the 1950s and 1960s, they became extremely wealthy. In 1968, people demonstrated for greater rights. In 1957, they established the European Economic Community, which facilitated trade between them.

Following the Soviet takeover, Eastern Europe turned communist. Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary all had puppet regimes. They joined Warsaw Pact in 1955 which was similar communist NATO. Soviets sent tanks to stop Hungary insurrection in 1956 and Prague Spring in 1968. They were deprived of their freedom and food. Germany was divided by the Berlin Wall until 1989, when a popular uprising led to the fall of the communist regime.

Mao made china communist in 1949. The Great Leap Forward tried to make china modern but made many people starve. The Cultural Revolution attacked old culture and made big problems. China stopped being friends with soviet union. In the 1970s china started talking to america and later added some capitalism but stayed communist.

South Korea

Korea got split after ww2 with communists in north and americans in south. Korean war started when north korea attacked south korea in 1950. America and UN helped south korea while china helped north korea. The war ended in 1953 with the border staying almost the same. South korea became rich later and stayed friends with america.

South Vietnam and North Vietnam, both communist, fought each other in the Vietnam War. China and the Soviet Union aided the north, while America aided the south. Americans resisted the war and many Americans lost their lives. Vietnam turned communist in 1975 after the United States left in 1973. On both sides, the war claimed countless lives.

Cuba

Fidel Castro gained power over Cuba in 1959 and joined the soviet Union during the Cold War. Because of the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, the Americans got scared, where people thrown out from Cuba along with America, couldn't do anything about Castro. Then in 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the world close to a nuclear war because the soviets put missiles there and bombs. When the soviets left, Cuba stayed communist.

Nicaragua

The Sandinista revolution is important for this. It overthrew the American dictators in 1979. The government was more into communism, so the Americans supported the Contras, the group fighting the Sandinistas. This obviously caused a civil war through the 1980s

The Islamic revolution of 1979 resulted in new leaders who detested America. In the 1980s, America aided Iraq in its conflict with Iran, and they abducted American hostages.
