1. History of Early Photographic and Cinematic Devices

[REFERENCE PHOTOS ON THE END]
  Camera Obscura [C.O.]
Its image projection and the fact that some substances are visibly altered by exposure to light are the roots of early photography.
The Camera Obscura is a natural phenomenon, also know as pinhole image, projecting a reverse image through a small opening onto an opposite surface.
The most antique recording of its use can be found in Chinese writings called Mozi, dated to the 4th century BCE.
Until the 16th century it was mainly used for studies in the optics and astronomy areas. In the later half of the 16th century technical improvements were made. The oldest known surviving photograph, a image of a roof know as "View from the Window at Le Gras" (1826 or 1827) was created by Nicéphore Niépce, exposing a polished sheet of pewter with a thin coating of bitumen dissolved in lavender oil during a very long time (nowadays believed to be several days).

   Zoetrope [Z.]
Its etymology is composed from the Greek words zoe (life) and tropos (turning), as a transliteration of "wheel of life". It's one of the several pre-film animation devices, producing the illusion of motion by displayinf a sequence of drawing or photographs.
William E. Lincoln invented the definite zoetrope in 1865 when he was circa 18 years old.
The Zoetrope consists of a cylinder with cuts vertically in the sides. On the inner surface of the cilynder is a band (ring) with images from a set of sequenced pictures. As the cilynder spins, the user looke through the slits at the picture across.

   Praxinoscope [P.]
Was the successor to the zoetrope. It was invented in France by Charles-Émile Reynauld in 1877. Like the zeotrope it used a strip of pictures placed around the surface of a sppining cylinder.
It improved the zoetrope by replacing its narrow viewing slits with an inner circle of mirrors, so that the reflections appeared more or less stationaru in positions as the wheel turned.
In 1889 Reynauld also developed the Théâtre Optique, an improved version capable of projecting images on a screen from a longer roll of pictures.

   Magic Lantern [M.L.]
Is an early type of image projector, employing pictures on transparent plates (usually made of glass), one or more lenses and a light source. It was mostly developed in the 19th century and commonly used for entertainment purposes.
The magic lantern was in wide use from the 18th century until the mid-20th century, when it was superseded by a compact version that could hold many 35 mm photographic slides: the slide projector.

Commonly types of mechanisms used to add movement to the projected image: Slipping Slides, Slipping Slides with masking, Lever Sides, Pulley Slides, Rock and Pinion Slides, and the Fantoccini Slides.

Mechanical Slides with abstract special effects include: Chromatrope, Astrometeoroscope, Eidotrope, Kaleidotrope and the Cycloidotrope.

   Shadow Theatres [S.T.]
Also known as shadow puppetry or shadow play, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets)which are hold between a source of light and a translucent screen.
The popular shadow theatre evolved nonlinearly into projected slides and ultimately int cinematography. According to Olive Cook (Writer of "Movement in two dimensions : a study of the animated and projected pictures which preceded the invention of cinematography", 1963) there are many parallels in the development of shadow play and modern cinema, such as their use of music, voice, attemps to introduce colours and mass popularity.
The Shadow Theatre was probably developed from "par" shows with narrative scenes painted on a large cloth and the story further related through songs.

Alex is the graffiti artist I admire the most. The first time I saw one of his graffitis I was going to the metro Vila Madalena doing my usual commute to high school, I was 14/15 years old, and noticed a wall painted with a man holding a brief case and a neutral expression on his face, whilst a speech balloon came from him with a heart symbol upsidedown and a tiny bird was right next to him with a balloon as well, but this time the heart was right. That enchanted me, and up until today it continues to enchant.

In their lyrics, the only thing they changed was "Since nineteen-sixteen" to "In two thousand eighteen" making explicit the permanency of War.

Song Analysis
Zombie - The Cranberries
Protest Song Analysis
My reading of 'Zombie'
At first, I understood the song to be about war in general and a child being separated from his family. In the first stanza, I understood that children were taken away for military purposes, however it actually refers to children dying and how the mourner’s “head hangs lowly” in sadness.

After learning the context of ‘Zombie’, I interpreted the song as a plea for peace from the Irish war, illustrating the anguish of those surrounded by conflict and violence in Northern Ireland. It is an angry and aggressive song, disapproving of the mindless violence seen in Irish history, especially after two young boys died as a result of the foolishness of the IRA.

The song uses the imagery of light and darkness to show how people's ignorance and apathy destroys their ability to communicate even on simple levels.
Its theme is man's inability to communicate with man. The author sees the extent of communication as it is on only its most superficial and "commercial" level (of which the "neon sign" is representative). There is no serious understanding because there is no serious communication - "people talking without speaking - hearing without listening". No one dares take the risk of reaching out ("take my arms that I might reach you") to disturb the sound of silence. The poet's (character in the song) attempts are equally futile (" . . . but my words like silent raindrops fell within the wells of silence"). The ending is an enigma. The words tell us that when meaningful communication fails, the only sound is silence.
https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/7354/

I interpret this song slightly different.

I feel it is an allusion to Plato's "Allegory of the Cave." While the ideas of commercialism (the people bow and pray to a neon god they made, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, etc) run throughout the poem, it also has to do with a frustration the narrator feels with humans in general. They are content to "hear without listening," not willing or interested in focusing on anyone or anything too intently. They are not willing to go beyond the superficial, but merely to accept the world around them, as no one "dares disturb the sounds of silence."

The allusion comes into play in the beginning, as the narrator has a revelation, a vision, that awakes him from this superficial, merely shadowed world. He rises, walks alone as the man in Plato's story did, and he sees the light. He tries to tempt others out of the cave of ignorance and look beyond teh surface of things, but his "words like silent raindrops" fall. His attempts are futile.

John Kenn Mortensen was born in Denmark in 1978. He is a writer and producer of television shows for children. The father of a pair of young twins, he finds he has very little time to do anything much, but when he does have a spare second, he draws pictures of monsters on post-it notes.
Don Kenn's pen is full of wonderfully creepy monsters which crawl onto sticky yellow note pads when darkness falls. Here we have collected some of the best monster drawings in a delectable hardback edition.

Odi was born on August the 1st of 1966 in São Paulo, lived his youth in the interior of São Paulo, but moved back to the capital because of University . Graduated in Architecture from USP (University of São Paulo), but he never practiced the profession.

He has illustrated books for over twenty years, and also writes some of them. According to Zahar website he "likes the type of literature that uses words and pictures simultaneously."

"Lá e Aqui", his and Carolina Moreyra’s book published in 2015.26.02, has won 3 prizes, "Prêmio Crescer - 2016", "Prêmio FNLIJ - 2016" and "Prêmio Jabuti - 2016". Described as a "Little Masterpiece which overflows emotion" by Zahar Website, the book is full of soft beautiful illustrations and really short sentences portraiting the separation/divorce between a couple with a little kid.

A year before that, he had the pleasure of illustrating Mauricio de Souza's, one of the biggest names in braziliang writing history, "Mônica é daltônica?"; a classic, the first story published on the "Mônica" magazine in 1970.

Odilon has participated in various rewarded writings, some of them which won the "Jabuti" prize includes: "A Saga de Siegfried"(1994); "Lá e Aqui" (2016); "O Matador"(2009)'; "Teleco, o Coelhinho"(2017); "Conselho"(2014).

Some of his own books are “A Princesinha Medrosa”, “Rosa" and “Pedro e Lua”

“A Princesinha Medrosa” is his very first book. It depics a little princess who is frightened of a lot of things. The princess uses all of her authority to deal with the great things - the fears of darkness, loneliness, and poverty. The little princess does not realize that her fear is, in fact, her own fear. And, while she fears the invisible and the unlikely, she lets her own happiness escape. It will be the help from a boy, who teaches to listen to the whisper of the stars, that she learns to deal with sadness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxeZq6PRee4

https://www.facebook.com/OdilonMoraesilustrador/

https://zahar.com.br/autor/odilon-moraes

https://www.companhiadasletras.com.br/autor.php?codigo=00762

http://leiturinha.com.br/blog/odilon-moraes-e-a-incrivel-capacidade-do-livro-ilustrado-na-literatura-infantil/

Was born in November 15th of 1948 in Rome (Italy). Her family moved to Brazil in 1950, when she was two years old. She graduated in Architecture at the University of São Paulo (USP), and from 1976, began to venture into the publication of pictures book, with no text.

She is a children’s book writer and illustrator, and has won the “Prêmio Jabuti” for Children’s Literature seven time. In 1993 for “Truks”; 1995 for “A Bruxa Zelda e os Oitenta Docinhos”; 1998 for “Anjinho”; two in 2006 for “Cacoete” in Illustration and Children’s Book; 2007 for “Felpo Filva”; and 2017 for “Drufs”.

I am a huge fan of Eva Furnari. I grew up reading her books in Livraria Cultura bookstore and at school. The only book from her that I ever owned was “Os Problemas da Família Gorgonzola” because it was on the school’s material list. The reason why I never had another one, as much as I loved her books, is because children’s books are very expensive, so I would read the books on the bookstore and not buy them. Her works that I love the most are: “Os problemas da Família Gorgonzola", “Umbigo Indiscreto", a Bruxinha (Zuzu)(“O Amigo da Bruxinha”), and “Nós”.

Eva mentions that hers two favorites illustrators are: Einar Turkowski (https://einarturkowski.de/galerie/) and Lisbeth Zwerger.

She also has collaborated in the children’s section Folhinha of the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo" , in which she creates one of her better-know character, “Bruxinha”.

In 2004 she was selected to illustrate a new edition of six children books by Érico Veríssimo.

Marilu gets a little makeover: https://cultura.estadao.com.br/noticias/geral,escritora-e-ilustradora-eva-furnari-retoca-uma-de-suas-mais-belas-historias-imp-,887792

http://www.evafurnari.com.br/pt/

“Lá e Aqui” is one of Odilon’s most recent works. Conceived in 02.26.2015.It won 3 prizes "Prêmio Crescer - 2016", "Prêmio FNLIJ - 2016" and "Prêmio Jabuti - 2016. But it’s not a solo work, Odilon only illustrated it, and Carolina Moreyra was the master of the words.

But what are words without a context/a image to which you can relate it?

“Lá e Aqui” is a highly emotive work, at least for those who are sensitive. It depics the divorce between a couple, a woman and a man, with a little kid. It is soft harsh on the phase of most suffering.

The POV (Point of View) is from the little boy. How he sees the house while their parents were together. A beautiful house. With a beautiful garden that had frogs and a tree full of birds. A big dog and a little dog. A pond full of fish and many colourful flowers. A dad and a mom.

The house is the family itself, there are still the characters, the dad and the mom, and the kid telling the story, but the house is the portrait of them as a family, it is their home. The house suffers as the family suffer, and is really vivid once the family is at ease and happy.

The house drowns once the parents start the divorce process, it drowns as they fight until the day they break up, and the dad leaves.

The dogs had ran away along with the birds. The frogs took the dad’s lost steps far away, and the fish stayed in the mom’s teary eyes (marejados). And finally, there was not a single house but two houses. The family had broken apart.

Now, there were two houses, two families. We do not get to know what the kid feels during the process, or once they are separated.

The story follows it’s path, and now the fish leave the mom’s eyes and go live in the aquarium, the frogs go back to the garden once the dad’s feet found their path. And that is the moment we know that the “grown ups” had settled down with their choice, and are at peace.

The boy now has the two houses. Two families. One day he is with the dad, on the other day he is with his mom, but either way he is at home.

I had the pleasure of reading the words on the book and seeing the images on it. I am sensitive, and felt really happy in the begging, sad on the middle and resigned in the end.

It begins happily, with a gorgeous pallet of colours, and happy drawings, that causes a warm feeling in the chest.

It is sad once the house starts to drown. How the rain pours over it again and again, and after five pages the house is completely submerged and empty. The flowers died and every living being had ran away. Then that warmth gets progressively cold, that is what hurts the most.

After the decisions had been made, and the couple is splitted, there is happiness again, for the boy at least. But once you had the experience of life you understand that is not the same happiness as the one in the beggining, this once is colder, and less bright. As far as one knows it is a pleasent happiness for the kid, but we all know it is not the same, and the kid will only truly understand that whole affair once he is old enough.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1Mk9pYQn8E

https://zahar.com.br/livro/la-e-aqui

https://www.premiojabuti.com.br/busca/?q=Odilon%20Morae
