Smith [CS]<br><br><strong>Estimated Casualties:</strong> <br>5,739 [US]<br>7,997 [CS]<br><br><strong>What Happened</strong>: Johnston tried to overwhelm two Federal corps that were isolated south of the Chickahominy River. There were a lot of casualties. Reinforcements came and more troops came from both sides. Johnston was wounded badly. This influenced the war because it appointment of General Robert E. Lee as Confederate commander. Both sides claimed victory.<br><br><strong>Result(s):</strong> Inconclusive<br><br><strong>Goal: </strong>To isolate South of the Chickahominy River. </div>]]></description>

Johnston [CS]<br><br><strong>Estimated Casualties</strong>: <br>182 [US]<br>300 [CS]<br><br><strong>What Happened</strong>: General McClellan made a very smart decision to travel by sea. They went across the Potomac River across Chesapeake Bay. It was a siege of Yorktown, and when Union finally attacked the Confederates retreated. However, the delay allowed for the confederacy to gather more troops. <br><br><strong>Result(s)</strong>: Union Victory <br><br><strong>Goal:</strong> To obtain the VA Peninsula </div>]]></description>

Jackson [CS]<br><br><strong>Estimated Casualties</strong>: 22,180 total<br>13,830 [US]<br>8,350 [CS]<br><br><strong>What Happened</strong>:  Confederacy (led by Lee) attacked first and wreaked havoc on the Union. This battle also ended with Union retreating as they did in the first battle of Bull Run. This battle proceeded to greatly lower the moral of the North. <br><br><strong>Result(s)</strong>: Confederate Victory<br><br><strong>Goal: </strong>The Goal of this battle was one last try for the North to obtain the Virginian Peninsula. However, this failed, and allowed the South to keep their stronghold at their capitol in Richmond. </div>]]></description>

Franklin Buchanan [CS]<br>Lt. John Worden<br><br><strong>Estimated Casualties</strong>: 600 total<br>500 [US]<br>100[CS]<br><br><strong>What Happened</strong>: First battle of the "Ironclad" ships. The smaller and faster USS Merrimack aka CSS Virginia defeated the larger and slower USS Monitor. Not only did this battle inspire hope among the Confederacy, it also lead to the end of wooden navies and brought in the age of metal. <br><br><strong>Result(s)</strong>: Confederate Victory  <br><br><strong>Goal</strong>: The goal of this was to create a new type of naval war which pretty much eliminated wooden ships. This was seen as a huge advancement. </div>]]></description>
