Jerry, a new student at an elite Roman Catholic prep school called Trinity High School, must face the freshman hazing practices handed down by the Vigils, a corrupt group of powerful students. When Brother Leon, a teacher, pushes the students to sell chocolates for a fundraiser, due to his own mistakes, Archie, the head of the Vigils, gets Jerry to reject selling for 10 days. Jerry, however, challenges the authority of the Vigils, which ultimately leads to his destruction.

Major Characters

Jerry Renault: Jerry is a Freshman at trinity high. He is on the football team with his friend goober. He is the one that refuses to sell the chocolates and sparks chaos in the school.

Goober: AKA 'The Goob' or 'Goubert'. One of Jerrys only friends at trinity. He gets an assignment early on in the book from the vigils and he is able to complete it. Throughout the book he shows his support for Jerry and his decisions.

Obie: Obie is a big player when it comes to the vigils. He is basically Archie's right hand man. Even though he may not like it he will do what Archie says.

Janza: aka: 'Janza the Animal' Janza is a delinquent and he loves trouble. Street life has hardened him to a cruel bully with no feelings for those around him.

Archie: Archie is the leader of the Vigils and the one who comes up with the assignments designed to aid in the tight grip he has on the school. He practically runs the school.

Brother Leon: Brother Leon is the main brother, or teacher, in the school. He knows all about the Vigils and their influence in the school and uses them as his personal problem solvers, no matter how they get the job done.
