Energize Schools is launching its annual People and Planet Challenge! This year, participants will complete weekly challenges to learn more about air quality and sustainability by creating campaigns to inspire sustainable behavior change across topics related to air quality, such as transportation, energy, and waste. Challenge activities are adaptable for distance, hybrid, or in-person learning,​ and are available in both English and Spanish.

The challenge is open to all middle and high school students, teachers, and administrators. Anyone who completes all four challenges will receive a sustainability specialist certificate, and participants in San Diego County are eligible to win prizes valued at a total of $3,000!

Interested in environmental education presentations for your classroom? Look no further than I Love A Clean San Diego. Presentations are free to public and private K-12 classrooms within the group's service areas, including, but not limited to, unincorporated San Diego County and the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, and Imperial Beach. Topics range from recycling and household hazardous waste, ecosystems and marine pollution, food waste, watershed pollution, ocean acidification, zero-waste lifestyles, climate change, and more. Programs are NGSS-aligned and vary in length from 45 minutes to one hour. The Energy Coalition - Energy is Everything 

Energy is Everything is a comprehensive energy education program focused on serving TK-12 students in California. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Community Engagement team has been working since 2005 to make the alliance's scientific staff and facilities available to challenge, engage, and inspire students from middle school to college. Their approach provides the opportunity to share a full, in-depth look at the work of conservation biology and the many fields of study that help guide conservation decision making. Specialized facilities offer the chance to work firsthand with the tools and techniques used in conserving endangered species. All of the programs are developmentally appropriate, relevant to real-world problems, and emphasize understanding through inquiry.

The Community Engagement team offers a 2.5-hour lab field trip program, titled Exploring Conservation Science, to interested science teachers and their classes. This program is open to middle school, high school, and undergraduate classes, and includes visits to both the Beckman Center and the adjacent San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido. The first event for this school year was released last Monday. There will be additional events every week for the rest of the school year starting tomorrow (Monday), so schools should sign up now!

"With over 155 residents, ranging in age from 65 to over 100 years old, the Junior Joy Giver Program has provided an immeasurable benefit to both our residents and staff. If we could have them here every week, it would be an ideal situation that would provide joy and inspiration to all ages." -Richard Kennedy, Executive Director of Emeritus Assisted Living.
The Junior Joy Giver program brings a new intergenerational component into our programming. By training youth to provide interactive music experiences for seniors, we can connect two diverse sets of people who otherwise would have very little interaction. Additionally, arts education (including music) has largely been removed from school curriculum. The Junior Joy Givers Program provides intensive arts training as well as training to become an excellent volunteer and member of civic society.
Resounding Joy used principles and approaches developed from professional music therapy practice to train children and teens, which includes drumming, singing, and music-making. The program offers in-person and virtual opportunities for performing, leadership, and learning new instruments such as the marimba, Q-chord, and tone chimes. Requirements:

There’s no way around it: children are significantly better off with strong science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics skills. That’s why STEM and STEAM education programs are so important.

Programs such as Tynker help kids around the world access a STEAM education and develop important 21st century skills like programming, creativity, and problem-solving. They offer schools STEM tutorials that integrate programming into a wide range of subjects, from geometry to social studies, and our platform has allowed kids to create original artistic projects and write more than 2.4 BILLION lines of code.

Here are 5 ways to celebrate on Nov.8th!
  1. Show off what they know. We know that project-based learning helps reinforce important concepts – let your kids create a program or mini-game explaining and exploring STEAM topics. Your kids can bring lessons to life and show off everything they’ve worked hard to learn. Tynker offers various tutorials throughout the year – like our Halloween and Fall coding projects or the Summer Code-A-Thon – to give kids a launching point for their creativity. Featured Maker Rebecca even presented her anti-bullying Tynker project to her whole school.
  2. Turn everyday occurrences into learning opportunities. What better way to celebrate National STEAM Day than to bring STEAM to life? If it’s raining, teach your kids about the how’s and why’s of the water cycle. During election season, spark their curiosity about how voting relies on math and percentages. Teachers can take advantage of a huge selection of STEM tutorials, and parents can get kids started on our Hour of Code STEM activities.
  3. Engage their interests. Learning is a lot easier when it’s driven by genuine interest. Ask your child what they’re curious about – whether it’s the ocean’s tides, groundbreaking women in history, or the life cycle of a butterfly – and help them explore their curiosity as they learn.   4. Artists – “give me an A!” Art has earned itself an A, turning STEM to STEAM. Our partner, Sharp Memorial Physical Rehab - ThinkFirst Program is offering in-person and virtual guest speakers for your classrooms. Each year, an estimated 1.7 million people in the United States sustain a brain injury, and thousands more experience spinal cord injuries. Youth under age 24 are more likely to get seriously hurt because they tend to engage in higher-risk behaviors. Practicing simple safety habits can prevent many of these injuries. This is the goal behind ThinkFirst, a grant-funded program that educates youth about injury and violence prevention. Each presentation wraps up with information on careers in physical rehabilitation.

The K12 Strong Workforce Program (SWP) dashboard examines Career Technical Education
engagement and completion for students at institutions awarded K12 SWP funding. This
initial release of the dashboard includes data from grantees in Round 1 K12 SWP funding for
School Years 2018-19 and 2019-20. During the webinar participants will:
• Learn about the suite of dashboards that make up the LaunchBoard, a statewide data
system supported by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office and hosted
by Cal-PASS Plus
• Gain an understanding of the metrics, drilldowns, and resources included in this first
release of the K12 SWP dashboard added to the LaunchBoard
• Explore how to navigate to find information for your institution, LEA, county, region or
statewide
• Better understand the current limitations of the Cal-PASS Plus data compared to other
CDE sources for similar metrics and for drilldowns
• Find out what is planned for future releases of the dashboard
