I ask for assistance all the time, literally everyday and I'm not ashamed to say that! Sometimes I feel reluctant to ask for help because I don't want to bother anyone, but I do it anyway. A few years ago, I used to think I was dumb for asking for help, I used to think I was dumb if I asked a teacher a question. Then I realized that I'm not. Surprisingly, a lot of people think I'm intelligent just by the way I speak and act! Anyway, after a while, I realized that even though I ask questions a lot, I am not dumb! I realized that if I don't ask, I will never get the answer or know how to solve a problem, which won't help me in the long run.

"He who asks a question remains a fool for five minutes. He who doesn't ask remains a fool forever." -Chinese Proverb

Self Sufficency Syndrome

" The Self Sufficiency Syndrome, as Collin calls it, is characterized by an inability an unwillingness to ask for help or delegate because of the belief that no one can do it as well as you can" (Communication and Coping Skills 13 ).

I suffer from this syndrome sometimes because I do feel as if no one can get anything done the way I want it to look and be. I'm very organized and a bit of a perfectionist, so its hard to let someone help me, knowing that what we're working on won't be as good as I want it to be. That can be hard sometimes, but it's nice to have a helping hand and not do all the work myself. So, ask for assistance even if what your working on isn't perfect in the end, at least its complete! It's also important to ask for assistance when trying to achieve a health goal or any goal, so you have some support system and encouragement in whatever you do.

"By offering before they need to ask you, you are showing that you care about them" (Communication and Coping Skills 14).

Sometimes when I know my Mom has been working hard all day, I offer to help her cook or clean the house. It can be a pain at times, but I know that by doing so I'm taking a huge load off her shoulders. It's also another way to show that I appreciate her and will be willing to help her when she needs it.

I also help out by volunteering in the community and at my church. I'm apart of many service groups at Bradley and I recently got into the teen volunteering program at Children's Hospital (I"m so excited and honored). Volunteering is a huge part of who I am and I love to do it as well.

"Volunteering is a great way to help out others in your community. Not only will this help others, but you will get a new perspective on your own life" (Communication and Coping Skills 15).
