His father was a poor weaver and Haüy is known to have a brother named Valentin (who founded the first school for the blind in Paris). René’s introduction to his faith wasn’t handed down to him by his parents. Haüy showed an early interest in music, which lead him to the abbey at Prémontrés (shown in the picture below). Encouragement from monks in the abbey brought Haüy to Paris when he was very young. He would be studying the classics at the College of Navarre.

His previous interest with music took off and he became very skilled at the violin and harpsichord. He even supported himself with his music skills for a time. Haüy’s faith journey also grew immensely and Haüy was finally ordained a Roman Catholic priest at the College of Cardinal Lemoine in 1770. Because of this, he was never married. When Haüy died in 1822, he was buried with his brother in the Pére Lachaise cemetery in Paris, which is shown in the picture below.

He would go often and looked up to the monks. After he moved to Paris, Haüy’s faith life only prospered. Haüy was first appointed a sub deacon in 1767, then a deacon in 1769, and was finally ordained a Roman Catholic priest at the College of Cardinal Lemoine in 1770. Much of his life was dedicated to science, which was his passion, but Haüy remained faithful throughout his life. He, however, was a priest during the French Revolution and because of his refusal to cooperate, his possessions were taken from him and he was imprisoned, along with many other members of the clergy at that time.

After he moved to Paris, he studied the classics at the College of Navarre (see picture). He studied a lot of literature and it was one of his bigger focuses during his school years. He also studied theology.

He taught there for 21 years. And after he became a priest, he also taught at the College of Cardinal Lemoine in Paris. Also, in 1974, Haüy became a physics professor at the Ecole Normale. His main focuses during his studies and teaching were physics, literature, and crystallography. Lindahall.org quotes, ¨Haüy found that every mineral has, at its core, a unique crystalline structure that can be used to identify and classify that mineral.¨ René Haüy is often called the ´father of crystallography´ and his work concerning the structure of different crystals is what he is most known and remembered for (see picture), though he is also known for working with pyroelectricity. In 1794, Haüy became the appointed curator of the Cabinet des Mines. He was also later appointed to the chair of mineralogy at the Museum of Natural History in 1802.

He has never talked or wrote (leaving behind no quotes on the matter) about balancing the two, though it is known that he did. His religious and scholarly sides did not mix until the French Revolution. During the French Revolution, the government became very anti-Christian. The government was both trying to seize the Church’s power, money, and land and wipe out the religion as a whole (see picture). Religious figures and members of the clergy were obligated to take an oath called the Civil Constitution of the Clergy which would be signing your consent to having all of your possessions and belongings taken. Being a Roman Catholic Priest, René Haüy was also subject to this. He was one of the members of the Clergy who refused to sign the oath and he was put in jail because of it. His papers and studies were seized. He did, however, find ways to continue his work and studying from inside jail while he was imprisoned. This is the best example of the integration of Réne Haüy’s faith and science lives. He made sure to maintain his lives in each and proved his dedication to both.
