My religion is something i struggle with because of the mistreatment and sexism the woman have to encounter from birth through to their arranged marriages at 18. I went to Jewish schools my entire life and this way of living was forced upon us.

Heterosexual and White

I am a cis-gender woman who is white and grew up among people in the same camps, schools, extra activities, who were like minded and similar values to find someone from the opposite gender and start families in their young 30's.

I currently live with a heavy amount of mental issues and health issues that are blinded to the naked eye. While in class growing up I got made fun of for being out of breath from asthma.

Social Class

A major assumption about me is that my family is in the upper-middle class of society. On the contrary my family is strained and barely holding it together. My father is remarried with a new family and my mother raised two very independent woman alone.

I am a female in a male dominated world and experience sexism even from my own family. The men in my family are very misogynistic and mans-plain things as well talk down to me.

Religion and education

The institution of schools in the public sector typically a melting pot of religions and world views. I was oppressed with comfort and safety of learning in a religion based private education, I was unable to experience other cultures first hand. When finally being able to break the threshold I was culture shocked by the overwhelming lack of similarities and different mind sets.

Dis-empowerment

From being forced to continuously having religion and the morals and values that follow behind the religion, it tore me apart from my identity by being forced a different identity. I kept being told that I should follow the laws of the torah at school while not feeling like i belonged so I followed and conformed to what they said. When leaving that society in collage I felt i had no power cause I had no way of understanding of how to interact in a multi cultural society. As of a result I developed white guilt and felt guilty for my privileges.

Heterosexual and White

I was born in to a race that is looked upon to hold power as well following social norms with being a heterosexual and liking the opposite gender. These privileges help with the law, job security, not seen as deviant. Being in a dominant group opens doors for careers, and a sense of comfort in society knowing you have a level of safety with authority.

Single story

In order to keep a level of power from my privileges I keep up a demeanor that is very basic and snobby type of person who i turn out to not even like. It holds a lot of power with in holding my privilege in my everyday life. This single story as well comes with a lot of assumptions of who I am and that I come off as a meaner person than I am. Its unfortunate that I feel the need to act this way but society has shown if I become deviant then I wont be respected by my community and peers.

The main reasons why I want to become a social service worker is while I was growing up and dealing with mental health issues, they were a very prominent role in my life. Through interacting heavily with people who gave me compassion and a sense of will to live; I wanted to do the same for others. The oppression's people face daily that are inter sectional, If i can provide aid or even make a minor change for the better in their lives and or in a communities life then I will be fulfilled.

OHRC Ontario Human Rights Code

The OHRC is charter that protects and defends any who's rights have been discriminated against or violated.Through these levels of government there is also remedy's that are offered and settled through the tribunal but with real change the process gets taken to the Ontario Human Rights Commission. With this added step new policies get put in place with the intended point of creating public remedy. I found this important and I use this way of diagnosis of harassment or discrimination I personally encounter.

Intersectionality

intersectionality was a very fascinating topic to learn about and present in to my daily life with respect to my daily surroundings such as my friends, neighbors, community. I live in a area that is primarily a minority but we take up a large geographical part of the community. Since these people are typically dressing and acting alike, the people who are different from our community face multiple oppression's since this community is built together with high social class, education, white and heterosexual. I watch while people face multiple oppression's for being them selves and the unique way intersectionaity makes their web of oppression's personalized experience facing these oppression's. I believe this was important to understand going in to this field because everyone faces the world differently and this is one way of trying to understand their oppression's.

Improve understanding of Anti-oppressive practice

As I continue on this journey to become a social service worker, I would like to gather as much information as possible as well, watching these practices in real life. Through real life experience, I would love to work in a shelter, or organization that is based on gender equality. Gender equality is a topic that is very important to me because I believe in equality for despite, gender, race, and status. The ultimate goal personally would to be able to obtain a PHD in the topic of social work so that I can pass down my learning's and understandings to others so that I can try and create a safer and better world for all.
