1. Coherence

I understood coherence is the logical flow—the "sense" of the text. My writing must have a clear organizational pattern so ideas progress naturally, not randomly.

2. Cohesion

Cohesion is the surface-level linking using tools like pronouns and conjunctions. I realize cohesion makes my logically strong ideas feel seamless and professionally polished.

3. Cohesive Devices

The key insight is that cohesive devices require strategic variation. I need to stop overusing "however" and "therefore" to make my prose more sophisticated and natural.

4. Unity

Unity is absolute focus. Every sentence must directly support the Clear Thesis. If a detail doesn't serve the main purpose, I need to be disciplined and cut it out.

5. Order

I learned that choosing the correct Order is crucial for coherence. For essays, the Explanatory Order (Simple to Complex) is best, as it respects the reader's need for a clear foundation first.

6. Completeness

Completeness means giving the reader enough. I need to ensure my ideas have sufficient development and examples. I must anticipate and answer any questions my reader might have.

7. The Holistic Process

The biggest lesson is the order of operations: Cohesion is the final step. I must establish the Unity and Order of the argument before I go back and insert my co hesive links.

Coherence and Cohesion Technique: Conjunctions

In my part, conjunctions are words that connect ideas and show the logical relationship between sentences or clauses. For example, words like however, therefore, moreover, in addition help us guide the reader smoothly through the text.

This technique works because it makes the writing flow logically. Without conjunctions, the sentences can feel disconnected and choppy. But when we use them correctly, the text feels more professional, organized, and easy to understand.

Example:

1. Without conjunctions: I studied very hard. I failed the exam.

2. With conjunctions: I studied very hard; however, I failed the exam.

As you can see, conjunctions help show contrast, cause and effect, or add more information.

Visual Representation (AI idea): Imagine a chain where each link represents a sentence. The conjunctions are the metal rings that connect them, so the chain doesn’t break and everything stays united.

Cohesion acts as the mechanism that makes visible the logical relationships that support coherence. Reference words and lexical cohesion operate in a complementary manner. The former avoids grammatical repetition through the use of pronouns and demonstratives. Reference words are grammatical tools that point to previously mentioned entities in the text, helping the reader register subjects without having to repeat the same words over and over again. They include demonstrative pronouns and articles. For example, ello, este, and this, the former, impact cohesion. Reference creates a chain that links ideas across different sentences. LEXICAL COHESION Lexical cohesion focuses on connecting ideas through vocabulary. This form of cohesion is not used in grammatical cohesion, such as conjunctions or pronouns. It is achieved through the repetition of a word, the use of synonyms, or the use of broader semantic relationships, such as iffonyms and hypernyms.

Cohesive devices are words or structures that connect ideas in a text to make it clear and smooth.
Conjunctions: indicate logical relationships, for example:

Additive: "moreover," "also," "however"

Causal: "therefore," "so"

Example: "Distance learning facilitates education; however, in-person education remains essential."

Substitution: replaces a term to avoid repetition:

"The dog bit the man. The canine caused the injury."

Ellipsis: omits information understood from context:

"Are you going to the party? —Yes, I am."

These devices act like "mortar between bricks," linking sentences to create a cohesive and professional text, improving comprehension and flow.

Explanatory Order, also called complexity-based organization, is a pattern that presents information from simple to complex, from familiar to unfamiliar, or from general to specific. Its purpose is to facilitate understanding by respecting the reader’s cognitive load, first establishing basic concepts, then intermediate ideas, and finally advanced ones. It is mainly applied in academic writing, such as textbooks and educational materials, and also in persuasive texts, where it helps create common ground before introducing more complex arguments. The main challenge is identifying the reader’s prior knowledge to adjust the level of difficulty and avoid confusion. In conclusion, it is a useful strategy to ensure clarity and progressive learning.

Understanding Coherence in Writing. Coherence in writing refers to the logical flow and connection of ideas throughout a text, forming a unified whole that readers can easily follow. A coherent text ensures that each sentence and paragraph contributes significantly to the overall message, with clear relationships that guide the reader smoothly from one point to another. Key characteristics of coherent writing include: - Logical progression of ideas following a clear organizational pattern - Consistent focus on the main topic without unnecessary digressions - Clear relationships between sentences and paragraphs - Smooth transitions that guide the reader through the argument - A unified purpose that ties all elements together.

The Role of Cohesion in Text Construction. Cohesion refers to the grammatical and lexical tools that connect sentences and clauses, making the connections between ideas clear and easy to trace. Include reference words (such as pronouns), conjunctions, lexical cohesion (such as repetition and synonyms), and techniques such as substitution and ellipsis. These cohesive devices help unify a text, ensuring that even complex ideas flow smoothly and feel connected. Without them, writing can appear fragmented, even with a logical structure.

For me, coherence and cohesion are what make a text clear and easy to follow. Coherence is about the ideas being organized in a logical way, so the reader understands your point. Cohesion is about using connectors and linking words to join sentences smoothly. Personally, I think these two things are essential, because when I use them well, my writing feels more natural and easier to read.
