There are some tips for using it:
1. Both structures are used for describing past;
2. It has to be a regular past event;
3. We are no longer engaged in this activity.
We use Used to + verb for both states and actions and Would + verb only for actions. 
For example: As a child I used to watch my parents preparing meals at home and I would imagine myself cooking something delicious.
