"In third grade
I had the chickenpox.
No field trip to the zoo
for me.
Sara said she felt sick too
then convinced her mom
to take us to see the lions and tigers // by ourselves" ( Brown 35).

This passage just shows the true friendship between Rachel and sara. Sara is kind and caring and she looks out for everyone she knows. Rachel is a rock for anyone who needs it but especially sara. They have an unbreakable bond that nobody can get in the way of. They make eachother feel happy and they can share their secrets to each other.

"I wonder
if she took her pills this morning
then I glance at the bottle
near the coffee pot
and she catches me looking."
(Brown 6)

This shows that Rachel is very concerned for her mother and if she is making the right choice, the right call about leaving her and the father. Rachel is very disappointed that she is leaving with not much of a reason. But her mom thinks its the right thing to do. Even though rachel blames it all of her father and still doesn't know the reason why she left them she still is worried about her and if she is doing the right thing.

"Yes, she says.
But sometimes they don't work.
And then she starts to cry"(Brown 6).

This passage shows that the relationship between Rachel and her mother might not be the strongest but it's their. Rachel's mother though feels that she can't give Rachel what she needs which is why she has to go. Rachel's mom probably feels that Rachel is taking care of her instead of vise versa. Rachel explains how her mom is a rock that crumbles and this passage proves it.

'"I wonder
if she took her pills this morning
then I glance at the bottle
near the coffee pot
and she catches me looking.

'Yes, she says.
But sometimes they don't work.'

And then she starts to cry"'(Brown 6).

This is important because this shows that Rachel knows that her mom has issues. And she wants her to get better. But her mom knows that the pills won't make her better. Her mom leaves and Rachel thinks that it's all her fault. But she doesn't want to admit it to herself so she blames it on her father. Rachel wonders if they did anything wrong and hopes that if her mom comes back that they would fix it. What Rachel doesn't realize is that having her mom back would make her life worse. And blaming her dad will not make her mom come back, or make anything better with her dad. Everything happens for a reason, but Rachel doesn't realize that yet.

"I told you not to marry her, says grandma// I knew she had problems.// Big problems"(Brown 34).

This is important to the book because it shows the reletionship between Rachels' mom, dad and grandma. It shows her grandma didn't like her mom and never wanted them to get married. This could show that her grandma wanted her to leave and maybe even caused her to leave. It sets an impersion of the grandma that isn't like others.
