What is the American Dream?

The American Dream to me is the pursuit of leading a better life that you and your family can succeed and thrive through hard work and effort. From my understanding The American Dream is a chance for people to lead their lives the way they want to live it. The definition of the Dream hasn't changed from its original meaning that James Truslow Adams gave, however, it's adapted over time for what people want their dream to be. Many want to lead a quaint little family life with stable jobs and nice homes, while others want to get rich and live big celebrity lives. Regardless of what many people's American Dream is, The goal of the dream is earned through hard work and effort that you put in for the life you want to lead. That is what I believe the American Dream is.

For me, my American Dream is to just have a nice little suburban house with a nice little community. I'd like to work as a content creator or Video Game designer and maybe live with that special someone. Maybe I'd start a nice little family myself and let life roll smoothly and at my pace. I might have to work very hard for that sort of dream but that's what the dream is all about, nothing worth having is gotten without hard work. It might not be the most grand dream there is but its mine, my American Dream.

For their views on the American Dream, I interviewed my mother about it and what she had to say is strong proof the dream is alive and well. My mother believes the American dream is having the opportunity to grow and thrive and find happiness on whichever life path that you choose. My mother grew up in a financially unstable environment, which, for many might be a reason for being "Unachievable", however, this motivated her, "Coming from a family that had to struggle financially pushed me to want more and push me to work harder and see what the world had to offer." Despite my mom's struggles she still managed to push through even when people important to her weren't there. "I didn’t have the opportunity to get advice from my parents growing up, which made me work that much harder to make sure that my children would not have to tackle the world without advice from their parents as well." Even in my mothers hard times she worked and pushed through and in the end made her dream possible. In her own words, "At this point in my life I have a good career that makes good money to provide for my family, I have my degree in astrophysics, and my children are safe and happy, and I couldn’t ask for more."

Poem

The Poem, "The rose that grew from the concrete" by Tupac can prove why the American dream is still alive and well. The poem says:
"Did u hear about the rose that grew from a crack

In the concrete

Proving nature’s laws wrong it learned 2 walk

Without having feet

Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams

It learned 2 breathe fresh air

Long live the rose that grew from concrete

When no one else even cared!"
The rose in the poem is referring to the success from Tupac himself with his hard life. Tupac had grown up in the ghetto and had lived a difficult life, but he managed to break free of that life through his works and pushed himself out of the constraints society had placed on him. "Learned 2 walk," means he managed to learn a way out of the life and "by keeping it's dreams, he learned how 2 breathe," means by keeping his dreams in his mind, he was able to push himself to the heights he needed to go. Tupac lived his dream by keeping them in his mind and worked hard for it, even if no one else cared.

Pursuit of Happyness

The Pursuit of Happyness is a movie that perfectly encapsulates how the American Dream is still alive today. The main character, Chris, is struggling heavily in terms of finances from a deal that had a falling out, as well as a divorce, losing his house, and people stealing the things he has to sell to live. His life is incredibly hard but he sees an opportunity to make it all better. It is a long and difficult road for Chris, even embarrassing himself to his employers, but his employers see his hard work and the lengths he's willing to go for this job and they realize that they could use dedication like that, thus giving him the job. This job was Chris' dream and it seemed unachievable but his hard work, dedication and strength of mind got him through to his dream in the end. That shows that even in the most difficult of situations, it is still possible to reach that dream that you're looking for.

The book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck can show what people really want from the American Dream and how the dream was still achievable even in a time where it seemed impossible. In this story George and Lennie were dreaming of a house that they were working for, and although it seemed like just a dream candy came in revealing he was listening and he wanted to be apart of that dream that he didn't think he could have at his age, then he made that dream a certainty. Candy states, " 'S'pose I went with you guys. Tha's three hundred and fifty bucks I'd put in. I ain't much good, but I could coook and tend the chickens and hoe the garden some. How'd that be?'" Then George says "'...if me an' Lennie work a month an' don't spend nothing, we'll have a hundred bucks. That'd be four fifty. I bet we could swing her for that.'" In this instance of the American Dream Candy's help and George and Lennie's air tight plan, they were going to get the home of their dreams with a nice place to be away from it all. Although in the end of this story an accident causes their plan to fall apart, it was still, with their minds and hearts together, possible to achieve.

A few people will say that the American Dream is impossible to grasp, however, those people will not think about the people already living the dream. The article The American Dream Is Alive and Well shows a survey that was taken asking if the dream was alive, and the results were, shockingly enough, that most people were already living it. In the article it states "The data also show that most Americans believe themselves to be achieving this version of the American dream, with 41 percent reporting that their families are already living the American dream and another 41 percent reporting that they are well on the way to doing so." These results prove that over 80% of citizens/families are living their American Dream or are almost there. Many will deny the Dreams existence, believing it only to be a Brainwashing tactic used to bring more people over, but these results can/do prove otherwise. This article is just one set of proof that the Dream still lives on.
