Culture : It was made in a period marked by religious decline in Europe. It is a creation and damnation triptych, starting with Adam and Eve and ending with a highly imaginative through-the-looking glass kind of Hell.  No one really knows why Bosch imagined the world in this particular way.

Description: It’s the expression of a late medieval artist who believed that God and the Devil, Heaven and Hell were real. Of the three scenes depicted, the left panel shows Christ presenting Eve to Adam, while the right one features the depredations of Hell; less clear is whether the center panel depicts Heaven. In Bosch’s perfervid vision of Hell, an enormous set of ears wielding a phallic knife attacks the damned, while a bird-beaked bug king with a chamber pot for a crown sits on its throne, devouring the doomed before promptly defecating them out again. This riot of symbolism has been largely impervious to interpretation, which may account for its widespread appeal.

Description: It acts as guardians to its crops and granaries. Although, its function to guard only begins when it has been consecrated by the rituals of the community; covering with blood of either a chicken or pig resulting in its darkened shade (Art Gallery of NSW, n.d)

The sculpture features a structure of a human with bent knees and facing forward. It was described by The Met (2022) that its intricate design includes holes on certain parts of the body such as its head, believed to be inserted with hair, and ear lobes for accessorizing.  Blade marks were seen to give more definition to its face such as the eyebrows, eyes, and cheeks. Based on such a description, it can be seen how its people give importance to its crop by producing such art to secure their lands and even consecrating it to associate their beliefs.

Culture: Andy Warhol is best known to be a pop artist in the pop culture movement. Pop is said to have originated from the postwar climate in the 1950s, where artists wished to place importance upon everyday objects in their artworks (The Art Story, n.d.). Unlike its predecessor, pop culture eases the rigidity of the modernist culture, favoring an “anything goes” kind of mindset for its works (“Modernism and Post-Modernism History,” 2017).

Description: The painting depicts an x-ray like photo of the artist’s dachshund. The dog presumably has dark-colored fur, seemingly wide-eyed in the painting. Unlike Warhol’s usual colorful works, this one is much more limited in its palette. The background is a light gray, with the dachshund painted mostly with an off-white shade along with 2 varying shades of black.

Culture: The painting originated in the Philippines, a tropical country with rich agricultural history. Fernando Amorsolo is a famous Filipino painter with the title as the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Art.” Amorsolo displayed deep interest with the Philippine heritage as shown in his other artworks. He is  famous for paintings such as “Dalagang Bukid” (1936) and “Plating Rice (1946)”(GovPH). 

Description: The painting displays ‘mastery over playing with light’ as this technique is what Amorsolo is known for. The work uses vibrant colors to enhance the visual of both the Fruit Gatherer and her surrounding environment. The painting depicts the Fruit Gatherer as a Kayumanngi girl wearing native Filipino clothing. She is holding a brown basket filled with fruits such as manga, bayabas, and a pumpkin. The background shows prominent green elements to visualize its environment within native agriculture. The painting’s provenance is in the Vargas Museum inside the University of the Philippines. Culture: DJ Doooo decided to add flesh-like silicone to his MPC beat-making machine, which accidentally ignited his passion for such horror and science fiction-like items. This passion was converted into art when he started to create more hyper-realistic items such as the Human Mouth Coin Purse, Blinking Eye Dice, Human Finger Stamp, and more. Perhaps the main culture behind this creation is the Japanese contemporary art culture. DJ Doooo, however, gives a functionality factor to his works. 

Description: This eerie and hyper-realistic object is essentially a coin purse. It mimics that of a man’s mouth—complete with facial hair and crooked teeth. To insert and get coins, the mouth can be opened and closed to reveal a small space that is enough to store coins.
