E - Instead of winning every competition, I think that displaying sportsmanship during a competition is more important. Sportsmanship is defined as ethical, appropriate, polite and fair behavior while participating in a game or a game or an athletic event. There are four elements in sportsmanship: playing fair, following the rules of the game, respecting the judgment of referees and officials, treating opponents with respect. I have seen athletes who take their victory too seriously and celebrate it with a prolonged victory dance or constantly brag about their abilities which is the exact opposite of what sportsmanship is all about. It can be just as hard to be a good sport when one has won a game as when one has lost one. Good sportsmanship takes maturity and courage — when one works really hard at a sport, it's not easy to admit that he or she has made a bad play or that one's opponent has more skills than himself or herself. In competition — as in life — one may not always win but can learn something from losing too. Games will get intense, heated and personal. Therefore, sportsmanship must be learned in order to be practiced in sticky situations. If athletes are not reprimanded for unfit behavior, there would be no guidelines for others to follow. Without sportsmanship, there would likely be chaos throughout various levels of play. There are many different qualities of sportsmanship. Some of them are: playing fair, staying positive, keeping thrash talk to the minimum, losing gracefully and respecting the rules of officials. P - There was one time when I entered a robotics competition for the school. After hours of hard work, I had finally completed the robot for the competition and was ready for the competition. I had a feeling that I was going to win. On the day of the competition, I had reassembled my robot and went to the venue of the competition. I had lost the competition. When I lost the competition, I had cried for a long time, until the teacher in charge of robotics had came to me and told me not to cry as there was always a next time. After that, she told me the importance of sportsmanship and that we should lose gracefully and not be "sore losers". She also taught me that after a competition, we should shake hands with our opponents. After hearing that, I had understood the importance of sportsmanship and that winning every competition is not important but the fun that I have had during the competition. By Loo Hsin Hong

Winning or losing does not matter. What matters is what o have done fairly and what you gained or learned from that match itself. P-There was once I went to a badminton competition recently. I played doubles with a friend of mine but she was not fit for playing as she was unwell. The badminton coach did some changes and put the captain to play with me.I had little experience with her so we got nervous when it was our turn against the opponents. As we played together,we did not know who will hit the shuttle as we were both good at the same parts. After the match,we ended up losing to that school,our team did not enter the second round. Our badminton coach gave the captain and I a good scolding,he told us to think about what we had done wrongly. After i knew what I had done wrongly. I thought it was my fault that we had lost,not the captain's fault that we had lost,I started to cry uncontrollably ,unable to hold back my tears. That day,I learnt that winning every competition does not count,instead i learnt something. There no gain when there is no pain. Constantly winning may give a false sense of your own abilities .I think we should learn how to accept win or lose,learn in the areas we are weak in and try our best in the next competition.We should not blame on our teammates or anyone when lose,displaying good sportsmanship.

E :Sometimes, if we lose a competition, we should never cry over spilled milk and think , why we lost that competition and learn from our mistakes. In that way, we will have a higher chance of winning the competition. Joining a competition must be something which you are willing to do, allowing you to put your all in it. If you are forced to do it, you will have a lousy attitude towards it and put in only a small amount of effort. In the end when they lose the competition , they will blame other people , like saying that the judge of the competition is bias ,and saying that they deserve to win the competition . P: I had a friend who always complained to me about her upcoming piano competitions and she hated playing the piano as it was a waste of time to her and she was forced into learning it for she was the only child in her family and all hopes were pinned on her.She could only complain to me and not to her parents as she did not want to disappoint her parents.Her parents also reminisced that she must get at least the top 3 as they pumped all her money and invested on her.I told her that winning is not important and she should tell her parents that she does not like to play the piano and she does not want them to waste anymore money on her and let her chase her own dreams.She took my advice and started joining art competitions and chasing her dreams, she also learned from her opponents who were better than her and improved herself whether she lost her competition or not. E- I think it is okay that if we lose the competition. As from the game , we could find out what are our weak areas and work on it next time to win it. We should not cheat in the game because you are just lying to yourself. If you won by cheating in the game or competition, I think and feel that you won’t feel good about it as you would remember how you lied or cheated to win the game. You would regret it as you did not earn it with your hard work. And you might hurt others by cheating, like making them disqualified from the game when they did not do anything wrong.
P- I had a friend in my Tution class who is very competitive and always want to win every little game or competition. She would do anything to win the game, as her parents told her to put effort in everything she did and try to be the best. She knew that she could not pass the spelling for the week as she did not learn. She than thought of an idea. But it was to cheat. To copy from the person sitting beside her when having spelling. She did thought of the consequences of her actions but did not mind, as she thought as her teacher was old , he is not very observant. When it was time to do spelling, I sat beside her. She copied what I wrote and hand up the paper. I saw what happened but did not tell the teacher . When the teacher returned back the papers , he asked both of us why our mistakes are exactly the same . She was so guilty that she told the teacher immediately. The teacher scolded her and told her parents. Her parents told and taught her that winning was not every thing and we should not do anything bad to just win like to cheat in a game or a test. We should work hard and learn from our mistakes and don’t repeat the same mistake the next time.

P- There was one time we played a game of ice and water class A vs Class B.First round the Class B was the catcher,the first person that got caught was Ben,Ben did not want people to tap him as he though that it is very embarrassing. so when he see there is no one around ,he stand up and run without getting tap by any of the people in our class.I went to him and told him that i saw him running without getting tap.He ignore me. I told the teacher after the game and and the teacher disqualified our class,all our classmate blame Ben for not playing the game properly. the form teacher scolded Ben for not having sportsmanship,Ben apologies to the whole class. by jadon poh

E: Not everybody can win all the competitions they face in their lives. Winning is only a small aspect of a competition. A competition is a process that consist of putting together a training program, training oneself to have the discipline, focus and determination to follow through the program and always train at the highest potential. After the training, the coach or teacher will select you for competitions base on your strength and weakness. During the competitions, winning or losing depends on many factors. After all, winning or losing is only part of the process.

P: During the recent badminton competitions, I had played in numerous games and had lost in some.After losing some of the games, I felt awful and disappointed but my parents cheered me up by telling me winning is only one small aspect of lives.

Even if we don't win, we should never feel discouraged. However, we should also put in our very best in every single competition no matter how tough or bad one is at. Losing is not the end of the world. On the contrary, winning is also not a thing to be proud of. It only gives us a step into our world of success.

P: I have taken part in numerous swimming competitions when I was much younger. In my very first competition, I got 5th place. I was not very proud of myself but my parents encouraged me and deepen my confidence level. After months of training, I took part in another swimming competition and came first. After all, winning is just a step into our lives.

Just then , my brother caught up and helped me up and helped me finish the competition. P- I have taken part in numerous swimming competitions. In my very first competition i came in last but I still think I need to have a positive mind to be better in the next competition. After a few months of training, I took part in another competition and I came in 4th I wasnt very happy for it and my mother told me that winning is not important, what's more important is i did improve from what i achieve the last time. I kept training till the next competition. Finally that day came, the competition that I was very confident for, in the end, I finally get first. Although i feel great being the 1st but i did congratrulate the competitors as they finish the race even though they knew they would not be the first.

S- I do not think that it is important to win every competition one takes part in.

E- It is not important as winning all the time makes the ones that did not win feel as if they would never be able to achieve a place in the top spot.They would feel as though they are not good enough or would blame their loss on their teammates.Whereas if the person/team who won keeps winning,they would get complacent and think that they are better than everyone.Leading to them bragging about their skills and looking down on the people who did not win.In my opinion,I personally feel that even if you do not win,if you have tried your best and worked hard,you would not feel half as bad,knowing that you tried you best.Through that lost,you have gained much knowledge about things you could have done differently and things that you should improve on.

E- However, displaying good sportsmanship is more important as it makes everyone feel good. If anyone wins a competition without any sportsmanship, I don't think it would be very meaningful. If you can win a competition, then try your best and try to win, but if you don't, don't be upset because you know you tried your best. Even if you know you are not that good at one event, don't give up, you never know where sportsmanship can lead you. When you lose, don't get upset because you can learn from your mistakes. After you learn from your mistakes, the next time you shouldn't make that same mistake. P- I have taken part in many different competitions varying from, ballet to jazz to tap to swimming and tennis and track and field. From all these different experiences, I realised that sometimes winning doesn't always make you feel good, but losing sometimes can. When you show good sportsmanship, others all around you will feel good. Imagine the world without sportsmanship. A disaster, a terrifying experience. Thats how important sportsmanship is. Losing and learning from your mistakes are a very good thing as you know that you made a mistake and you changed it. In competitions that I don't win, at first I will get upset at myself but afterwards I will think about what I did wrong and what I did well. I will use what I did wrong and try to change it for the next time. Every time, there will be spots that we all can improve on. E- Having said that, I think that Sportsmanship is more important than winning the competition. The feelings of the two parties should be the most important out of everything. This is because if someone bursts into anger from losing the game or being constantly teased by the opposing team, the outcome would spoil everybody’s mood and even the spectators maybe would get into a fight aswell. Sportsmanship consists of teamwork, respect, courage, and other good values. Sportsmanship is important in every competition ever held because it balances the mood or feelings at the outcome of the competition. For example, if a player loses the game. The opposing player with sportsmanship should come forward and instead of bragging of his achievement, he should first at least tell the person he was fighting with for the win on which parts he did well and which parts he had to improve on.

P - There was once when I was playing basketball, my team was challenging against another team. We had been practising basketball for the match that was about to happen. We spent weeks shooting the ball into the hoop, controlling our aim of the ball and hand signals on when we should pass the ball. But however, on the day of the match, due to our excitement and lack of focus, we became overconfident and in the end lost the match. We were actually annoyed at the other team for winning us because we thought that we would win from the start. However, to our astonishment, players from the opposing team came forward and told us on our weak points and strength. They also said that even though we weren’t focused, we still played well. My mood slowly became happier and ever since, we learnt not to be cocky in every situation we are in.
