I always had gradeschool classes with people with disabilities growing up and my mom always stressed how important it was to be kind to them even when I didn't understand why. In my family we see disability not as something to be cured but something that makes you unique and special. I've always been raised to respect disabilities and treat those people with the utmost respect.

I believe that I was raised to view autism in a very positive light. I grew up with a good understanding and knowledge of autism so I think this helped the way that I perceived people on the spectrum. My mom made sure that I never viewed ASD as a negative but rather as something that made people different.

Growing up, I was always taught that every person is unique and different from one another in that, it is important to be respectful of people and their differences. Disability is part of the individual, which is important to recognize. Additionally, supporting individuals is critical.

I was raised to perceive disabilities as something that is all around us and that it isn't necessarily something that is a bad thing, but something that is just different from who we are. There wasn't a lot of disability in my family, or in my immediate microsystem, but my parents tended make a point in saying that we don't judge others with disabilities, we do what we can to help them if they need it.

Since I am hispanic, I was always told to deal with it or suck it up. My family does not necessarily believe in things such as anxiety or depression since they believe that their past was much harder--and that I am blessed to be in the situation I am today. I totally am blessed, but things such as mental disorders and autism are not really discussed thoroughly. Older members in my family are also very religious, and believe that god or jesus will always help you. I completely respect that, but sometimes it is nice to see conditions without the presence of another entity or power.

In elementary school I had students with a wide range of disabilities in my classes and so I learned from a young age to be accepting of those with disabilities and see the individual for who they were and not just for their disability.

My parents would see psychological disorders as something someone can get through without any professional help such as therapy. They thought that someone with a disorder would just get better over time, and they don't actually have the disorder until they seek professional help and get a diagnosis. I definitely disagreed with my parents.
