Hokkien is a southern Chinese language that was, at the time, the dominant spoken language on Taiwan, and I needed to learn it for fieldwork. The best way, if literacy in Chinese was not an issue, was to work with the textbooks and translations in romanization prepared by Christian missionaries. (Our Hokkien teacher was a Presbyterian elder and fully conversant with the romanized version of her language.) (I think I know where it is . . .)

In 1605 "The ingenious hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha" was published, the first part of the monumental work written by Miguel de Cervantes in a Castilian so remote that, nowadays, even teachers The most common versions of Don Quixote, those still used in many schools in Spain and Latin America, usually have more than a thousand footnotes to explain to the reader the idioms that have fallen into disuse, some so long as entire pages. The structure of Castilian Spanish does not seem to have changed much since the time of Cervantes, but many of the expressions and words that were then common have changed or disappeared over the centuries. . The literary language is rich in the most varied resources. The most significant: Use of topics, Comparisons, Metaphors, Synonymy, Repetition, Ellipsis, Word play, Paronomasia, alliteration, rhyme Levels of speech. Each character speaks as is proper to their condition and culture. But, sometimes, Cervantes introduces the word, the expression that is not proper to the character's speech. This mix of linguistic levels is one of the most outstanding aspects of the style.

Cervantes makes the characters speak according to their condition: Don Quixote uses the language of knights-errant. Sancho, who cannot read or write, uses the language of the town, full of proverbs and abundant inaccuracies.

This book was bought by my father in the 70s, it came to me because a Spanish teacher in high school cultivated my restlessness, this literary jewel has a lot of influence on our language.

English is my second language. I have many books in English and one is BKS Iyengar Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health by B. K. S. Iyengar. This book is an illustrated guide to Iyengar Yoga, featuring photographs of yoga poses demonstrated by Iyengar and his students. Iyengar was an Indian yoga master, one of the world's leading teachers of yoga for over 70 years. Although he passed away several years ago, he is still internationally recognised as a leading authority on hatha yoga. I bought this book to learn yoga and improve my English. It has become one of my favourites.

Yoga originated in ancient India. Although, there have been cultural exchanges between China and India since ancient times, yoga has only recently become popular in China. In China, several physical and mental disciplines exist, which share some common ideas with yoga. For example, both yoga and tai chi share the idea of the existence of the universal energy that flows through the body. In tai chi this is called Qi and in yoga it’s called Prana. In addition, both forms of exercise focus on the importance of breathing to assist the flow of energy through the body. Both exercise forms also share certain other processes which they believe opens blockages to the flow of energy through the body. One could also argue that both exercise forms are meditative in nature.

MANY LANGUAGES I have books about Tatsumi Hijikata the father of Butoh. An old dictionary of the Russian language; the selected poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke in English and German and a large selection of antiquarian books - mainly literature and poetry, some in various languages - I collect old dictionaries and have various languages, Latin, Greek, German, Russian, Chinese. A book on simplified Japanese, Japanese Fairy Tales, Samurai patterns, A Book of 5 Rings - which is partly Japanese and partly English. Bushido in English and Japanese references. I don't have access to a working camera to post. Most of these books were acquired for studying poetry or Japanese myths, and Geisha. A book on Samurai Patterns, I have this as I hand embroider, I have been doing since a child. I have also included Japanese references in my poetry.

( I've also got two translations into English of Madame Bovary and the French original) My intentions are good but I have to admit that I have not completed the tasks. It is interesting to explore texts and their translations and to see how translators' cultural filters can effect meaning. If one looks at, for example, the Bible, one can see that its history is very complicated and yet it can be seen as, and is quoted as, clear messages/rules/guidance.

I bought this dictronary some 11 years ago, while living in the Syrian capital, Damascus. I went into a bookstore looking for a different book, I was trying to get my hands on a 19th-century antique Ottoman Turkish to French dictionary, but the owner had either already sold it or didn't want to sell it to me and tucked it away somewhere. I saw this on a shelf and it just stood out to me. An Circassian to Arabic-English dictionary which was locally produced in Damascus- just seemed to me to be something both hyper-local and unique. There is a small population of Circassians in the Middle East with Syria having a community. Most are descedents of refugees who were expelled from their natives lands in and around areas like Sochi by an expanding Russian empire in the 19th century. The region is now part of southern Russia and is within spitting distance of places like Chechnya. The dictionary was seemingly part of a language revival taking place among Circassians in the Middle East, who due to being in the Middle East for over a century, had largely integrated into their new socities. I have no connection to the culture but it represents an interesting attempt to re-discover roots in an age where many people have anxiety over their own place in the world. The fact this dictionary tells this story is what attracted me to it.

I am from France and I started recently reading English translations of Chinese webnovels. The first that comes to mind (and because it's sitting just in front of me) is 二哈和他的白猫师尊 (Èr Hā Hé Tā De Bái Māo Shī Zūn). It's a novel about a cruel emperor who lost everything and killed nearly everyone who loved him. He decides to end his life but as the poison takes effect, he sudddenly wakes up years in the past, in a time when he was still a disciple of a well-known cultivation sect and everything that had gone wrong hasn't yet come to pass. I'm unable to read this book as it is too high a level of Chinese for me, but I wanted to support the author and I have to admit that, as a Publishing student, I really wanted to have a look at a Chinese book to see the differences with English and French's ones.

Recent titles I have read include, 'Maigret in Vichy', 'The Wine Seller' and 'Maigret and the Vagabond'.

I also the enjoy the books because it's good to read a police procedural set in a time when there were no CCTV cameras on every corner, no smartphones and the Inspector gets to go home to eat a lunch cooked by his wife!

The culture of the book and writing, its ancestry and linguistic evolution of writing is a high level of knowledge to know and recognize in expertise in the history of civilizations in ethnolinguistics links with philosophies and evolution of sciences and intelligence, in ethnogeography of words and formation of expressions of things in speech, petitions, testimony, theater in writing the book and plots to music and identified truths and corruptions, erosions of culture through the study of the sciences of ethnolinguistics and archewritings and at the computational and physical-chemical biological level and restoration of evidence. Ethnogeographic adaptations and modern sciences had initial steps through evidenced and observable records, but much was lost in time and wars, catastrophes and the persecution of humanity. My contribution here is to learn, I have ethnoculture of ethno-linguistic ancestry, German, Iberian, Italian, Dutch, Euro-Western and adapted in the colder south of Brazil and I have higher and international studies in history, immigration and scientific and economic politics, diplomacy and I have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering with specializations, I am also a long-life sportsman and I study cinema, war sciences, writing and culture and philosophies in science, martial arts, economics such as kaizen and economic thought known in capitalism and democracy. Much of the Euro-ethnolinguistic culture was eroded by the political system of the anti-democratic republics and post-war oppression and ancestral anti-European politics and linguistic culture of linguistic formation, such as centralized guilt and social economic policy for the errors of the Luso-Portuguese and Iberian Latinization policy in Latin America and the exaggerated use of the vernacular, characteristic catachreses, simple popular and exaggeration in figures of speech with synesthesias, and slang, distancing from the best cultured understanding and scientific connection of words, languages of things, uses and processes of the past and the evolution of human intelligence and languages and writings, taxonomy and by links in the value of what is and what is not real, and of the most exact law and the differentiation of terms and understandings. In this loss of identities of knowledge that are and dogmatic disregard as vulgarly dominated and ignorance about this knowledge at a general population level. Frequent communication of popular sayings that are highly impactful, in the balance between the design of literary didactics of word formation and correct meanings of literary links in writings and applied crafts with gains and competitive advantages and established standards and renewals and the distance from the art of writing and comprehensive synthesis with links in truth and evidence, perspectives and imaginable, the method and composition, perfect harmony, obligatory and potential.

Nations and languages and cultural ethnolinguistics victimized by socialism and colonialist political paradoxes of orthodox communism populism and religious Christianity of illusions and by autocracy of dictatorships with low intellectual and administrative level.

I study these interrelations and multidisciplinarity in science, engineering, genetics, archaeology, languages and also a little Japanese sporadically because I have interests in the language and culture of Sino-Japan and Western Euro-American, Nordic, European, Ukrainian. I have had some books by Nietzsche in German, German in Spanish about dogs and English, Portuguese and the Native American Guarani language. I am also an independent and scientific researcher, business person, agnostic, agroscientist and studies in different contents and subject-matter for expertise and independent think tank. Nietzsche's book Werke 2, which I identify with, is a good part of the cultic society of West Germany and North America and Asian Japan, English as the coexistence of the will of the superior human being to have and know, normal pasts of arduous paths, wars and man as a machine of disputes and knowledge for the future and against errors, but human power and the divine nonexistence and Christianity with the metaphysics of the executioner.

Spanish, German and Slovenian books

Though English now feels like my first language it is actually not, i am actually Slovenian. So in a sense almost all my books are foreign language books these days: the vast majority in English, but I also own some German and Spanish books in addition to the handful of Slovenian ones. I have always been a big reader and started reading English books as a teen learning the language. I found it helped me with my language skills enormously so I did the same when learning other languages. The last few years I have been enjoying Japanese and Korean content, so I started this course to learn about books from Japan.

In terms of the books themselves, there is a huge variety, but my favourite ones have always been sci-fi and fantasy books for how they create whole worlds that allow us to explore difficult ethical, political and philosophical concepts in an entertaining way. And I am always fascinated by reading books by diverse authors: they have different perspectives; their cultural and socio-economic background will normally influence the text. When possible I will read the books in their original language as I find that gives best access to those aspects of the book (which can get lost in translation otherwise).

At home, I have books in several languages — not just in Spanish, which is my native language, but also in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, and Chinese. One of the most special ones is an original volume of a Japanese illustrated novel called Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari (The Tale of Jiraiya, the Gallant Hero). It's from the 19th century and was published in Japan during the late Edo period. The characters are written in classical Japanese, with a style and calligraphy that are really difficult to read — at least for me!

The story is about a ninja hero called Jiraiya who uses toad magic. It's a well-known legend in Japan and has inspired lots of later versions in different formats, including kabuki plays, manga, and even anime. I actually bought this book just because I found it very cheap in a second-hand Japanese bookshop and couldn’t resist! I know some Japanese, but reading this kind of text is a real challenge, so I’m trying to keep improving in the hope that one day I’ll be able to read it properly.
