The quote “Unstuck in Time” is mentioned frequently throughout this book. The main character, Billy Pilgrim, travels through time at random points, with his mind experiencing unstuck in time. The first time “unstuck in time” was said in the book, aliens abducted Billy Pilgrim to explain what he was experiencing. Later in the book, he experiences it many more times, from being born to not even alive.

Billy Pilgrim is traveling through his history and future, and the only things that make sense to him are what the aliens explained about “unstuck in time.” At some points, he is back in the battle group; at other points, he is just coming out of the womb, but Billy PIlgrim has the same 28-year-old college kid brain that he has at the beginning of the book.

The author, Kurt Vonnegut, was a POW (prisoner of War) during World War II, captured by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge. His experiences during this time, including being held in an actual slaughterhouse called Slaughterhouse-Five, deeply affected him. However, his memories were fragmented and painful, leading him to create a fictional soldier named Billy Pilgrim. This character, like Vonnegut, experiences time in a unique and disorienting way, almost like a superpower.

O'Hare is a long-time friend and fellow veteran of Kurt Vonnegut in the bombing of Dresden. O’Hare is one of the book's characters, Billy Pilgrim's friend and war partner. O'Hare is mentioned many times in the story because he took care of Billy Pilgrim many times during world war ll, saving him more than enough times.
