Concepts that Inspired Me

1. I did an internship back in 2008 with the Centre for Development Finance, IFMR in Chennai India, where I saw people on the ground that were working hard to solve a seemingly impossible problem. This issue has always been top of mind since then, as I've lived outside India for 2 decades but continue to visit regularly. Every time I go back, I see small positive changes in cleanliness and hygiene. This inspires me to do what I can, however small.

2. This article shows the number of companies that are working toward sustainable solutions for India's waste crisis. I trust in their abilities to decide their solutions, however I do believe communications will play a vital role in getting to community to embrace their part in achieving a cleaner society.

3. I was inspired by Hindustan Unilever's ability to tap into and create a distribution network in notoriously complicated rural markets in India. The attached HBR article talks a little bit about how they did this. This case study inspires me to believe that there may be a way to tap into the disorganized labor market and pull them into the waste management effort in a real and financially sustainable way- a win/win for all parties involved, and a big win for the environment.

1. Sweden: While not an organization, the country of Sweden has run out of trash! Less than 1% of household waste ends up in landfill. They have created a system waste management that powers heat and electricity for households.

2. These top 10 waste management companies in the world work with their respective countries' governments to effectively collect, sort, manage and sustainably dispose of solid waste.

3. The Teocelo Vermicomposting Plant in Teocelo, Veracruz, Mexico is an case study of successful solid waste management in a 'developing' country.

This ad is part of a campaign to get pedestrians to use the zebra crossing. While it is entertaining and effective to someone like me who understands the reference, it may not reach the average person. The tactic however, is still effective- just needs to be localized and targeted toward its audience better.
