Since most vocabulary acquisition happens incidentally, it is important to be "word conscious" (aware of words and curious about them) because then one will have more opportunities to learn and will be internally motivated to take advantage of those opportunities.

Vocabulary and the lack of plays a leading role in a child's success in school. A child needs to learn about 40,000 to 50,000 words by the time they graduate from high school. They way we used to teach vocabulary will not help our student to meet this goal. This is why we need to develop word consciousness in our students.

Developing word consciousness is important, because reading and comprehension are so important in the world in which we live. Being able to express oneself or hold a conversation is contingent on having a vocabulary. When children are exposed to new vocabulary and are taught how to explore new words, it helps build that curiosity which leads to a more intrinsic motivation to find the meaning of words and build their vocabulary on their own instead of relying on parents, teachers, etc. .

Word consciousness is important because accurately expressing oneself is a vital life skill that students should be learning so that they can use a variety of different words to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and actions as well as understand the expressive language of others.

Word consciousness is vital because it can help shape a child's personality from one that is internal to their external personae dealing with others. If one stays in the region of their birth, many times their vocabulary will not grow and develop to include words and phrases of other regions, cultures or people.

WHY develop Word Consciousness: Students need to understand the power of words. As I have worked with students for whom English is a second language, I have realized how much of a person’s identify lies in their language. A person who wants to succeed in an English speaking country understands how important mastery of the language is to their successful navigation in society. Language is an identity, and life without language leads to servitude. An adage I use with my adult students is: “The more you learn, the more you earn.” It definitely applies to the rationale and motivation as to WHY my students need to develop a word consciousness.

One reason to develop word consciousness is so that students become stronger readers and writers. As vocabulary grows they become confident in themselves and the knowledge they have. Growing bigger vocabularies also will be very beneficial as they grow older and begin their own careers.

Word consciousness is important because we all have feelings and those feelings have an overriding effect on how we develop and what we learn. The Matthew Effect is that literacy gap between the advantaged and disadvantaged which tends to grow, as the rich get richer language and the poor just get poorer. In terms of equity we have to connect affect to learning and help all students fall in love with becoming word conscious so that all students become word-richer. Believing you can express what you mean to express and be understood is a powerful motivator and it leads to well-adjusted human beings.

World consciousness is important because research shows that the student who comprehends text has a strong vocabulary. Vocabulary increases as a result of reading vocabulary-rich text. I love the article about Mrs. Barker's classroom. She incorporates world consciousness into her classroom successfully. So cool!
