ABOUT JESSICA

There is a lot that meets the eye that is hidden inside. What I have learned about myself through these years as I grow is that I love to be passionate about life. I enjoy yoga, reading, good tv shows, cooking, date nights with my husband, movie and popcorn nights with family, game nights and conversating with friends over yummy food, stormy weather, the ocean, laying in any body of water, and watching my daughter being a little social being. I love trying to create a life for my family to thrive. I am a woman who loves having an impact on the future, and that is one reason why I chose to work in education. I enjoy working for something I am passionate about, and when I overload my brain and get stressed out which happens because I am human I cope by controlling what I can, so I clean and organize my environment.
Even on hard days I know I am doing my best to be a dedicated and passionate woman who is a mother of a daughter, a teacher for the future, and a wife to a police officer. Each of these roles has many challenges and responsibilities, but I am grateful to be here and that is what keeps me empowered to live my life of liberation, love, laughter, light, and learning.

INTRODUCTION - educator self

Hi, hi, hi, hi,
The purpose of this e-resume is to showcase the hard work, dedication, values, and heart I exhibit in everything I do. This resume showcases glips of my work during my time teaching the last three years, working on my Mulitple-Subject teaching credential, and Master's Program while attending National University.

I believe that teaching is a passionate job and as a teacher, we must support students to look deeper into their work and themselves to find reason or purpose. Therefore, I also included some insight into my life to exhibit important lessons I've learned or values I feel are important to me as an educator to be completely transparent about who I am as an educator and person.

Passion - my fuel:
I value self-discovery at any age, but I find that childhood is an extremely important time in a child's life to build their mental "toolbox" to help them navigate through life. This is why I love working with children and seeing them grow in all aspects of education (academically, socially, emotionally, and mentally).
I value individuality, justice, diversity, integrity, inclusion, and equity. As an educator, I get to teach these values when problems arise in the classroom which is why it's exhausting at times because working with younger children these values aren't developed, or even known about yet, or are not valued in their family system. As an educator, I feel it is my responsibility to impact as many kids as possible and be a light in their life. Growing up I did not have a supportive or healthy childhood experience. My home environment was unsafe and unreliable, it wasn't until I went to school that I felt safe, and had a sense of belonging, and a love for learning. I have always loved school for so many reasons, but if it wasn't for my wonderful teachers along the way I wouldn't be where I am today. They have inspired me to be the amazing and passionate educator that I am today. This is why I believe in the importance of individuality and how self-exploration and reflection create growth in each individual. I believe that thinking about your thoughts at an early age will help create a better future because that is how I was able to survive my childhood. Hope you can see my growth through the last couple of years by being in the educator field.

Goodbye, bye, bye,
Thanks for checking out my page. I hope that you have been inspired by seeing how motivated, dedicated, professional, and ethical an educator I am.

MUCH LOVE,

Jessica Crayne

Going into teaching I was really nervous that I wouldn't have support from administrators, parents, or co-workers. Luckily enough I found my support in these women who have helped me find my voice in the workplace and navigate challenges that rise in the classroom. The best part about a co-worker's support system is the empowerment and care we give each other each day. It takes a village to rise a child...Well in education it takes a village to get through the school year. Everyone needs support and connections.

This "Rate Yo' Self" was one fun way I track student self-assessment in 2nd grade. In Kindergarten I used a fist to 5 or thumb up, middle, or down. Students will close their eyes to create a trust for each other, and I establish this for students to be honest with themself. This data along with other data (exit tickets, formal and informal assessments) inform me where each student's confidence and maybe even academic level are at. Overall, I use multiple types of data to run the lesson planning, instruction, teaching style, and classroom flow (partners and groups). For example, to create small group instruction, and skills and targets for these small groups. I also use this information to guide the re-teach lessons and/or extension lessons.

Every month my class focuses on one character trait to build character and work on self-discovery. Some traits we have worked on are Kindness, Respect, Honesty, Integrity, and more. We have detailed and impactful conversations to build the trait into actions/words and thoughts/feelings. Throughout the month I find books and quotes that demonstrate the value of the trait for students to really think about how it relates to them and their experiences to really discover and learn about themself.

The Birthday Bag is just one way I like to build class community. The students take this bag home that is filled with books and a notebook. The birthday person takes it home for their parents to read them the books, write a journal entry for their child that I read in front of the class, and fill it with an item the student is allowed to keep on their desk for the day. The main reason I enjoyed this concept is because of the emotional notes parents write to their child and the emotions that move through all of us in the classroom. We all have cried, laughed, smiled, and felt loved through these letters.

My first year teaching during a pandemic has pushed me to grow oh so much! I am very proud of my growth as a professional educator, this was one of the hardest years in my life... I was a new mom, new wife, and new teacher during a pandemic. I faced many challenges not just at work but at home as well. At work, I was establishing my own classroom management, techniques, and understanding and implementing California State Standards. Facing this pandemic with my students who looked up to me for safety and encouragement I realized that this year was going to be a rough year for everyone in many ways, so I used joy in lessons to create an environment for students to feel loved, valued, safe, and joyful. During this year I also learned how to incorporate many online platforms while teaching on Zoom and in person to build student academic growth.

The Teaching Pandemic - nobody wants to talk about

I created this infographic during my master's program in 2019 before I started teaching. I was writing a lot about burnout prevention because I didn't want to be a statistic or stereotyped for "not being able to handle the profession." These burnout precautions I knew were issues from much research, and they can be reasons for teachers leaving the field of education, but there is MUCH MORE to it... Let me fill you in... Teaching is a job that people chose to do because they wanted to make a difference in children's lives. We all know that childhood is the most crucial stage for brain development, so some can say it is the most important part of one's life because the brain is creating the systems to which you'll live for the rest of your life (not saying that you can't rewire your brain, because you definitely can. It's just programmed as a child and it's harder to rewire as we age). Therefore, teaching is not only about ABCs, 123s, HISTORY, OR Science -being a civilized human in a social world, in (which children can learn a lot through structured or unstructured play)... It's MUCH MORE about creating the world into a better place generation by generation, thought by thought understanding, bringing joy into the day, learning to cope with emotions, and MUCH MORE for me.

The factors that are learning teachers feeling burnt out are the levels of disrespect for the profession from some. You hear it all the time on the internet. Teachers are "qualified babysitters,” so we teachers come back to say "pay me the babysitter rate for each child if that's the case." We are MUCH MORE than babysitters, we should be getting paid MUCH, MUCH MORE.

It's also overworking every day, week after week...many nights at work instead of a home to planning out the week, the events, gather material, clean/organize the learning environment, the progress cards and report cards for 30 kids, the emails, the unimportant and important tasks, the daily meetings over lunch and "preps" that fills me with resentment because we don't have enough time to do it ALL. We all in education need to understand that is the reality that it can not all get done every day. It is a marathon. I have worked in a district where teachers are being overstretched into many jobs, tasks, children, meetings, plans, curriculum, paperwork, and parents is so exhausting, and yet we still come to work every day with a smile and heart of gold to enrich these children's lives, while the job is eating away at our lives in many aspects. This is because the right administration does matter. If a teacher is not meshing well with the culture and administration of the school, it is probably time to move on to a school that will fit your values more.

These issues are REAL and teachers MATTER. These issues are only the tip of the iceberg- being an educator in the flawed educational system in the United States, unfortunately.

Changes need to be made, not just within each school, not just in HR, not just in the curriculum, not just the teacher workload, not just the school systems, not just in legislation, but MUCH MORE in the minds of everyone who overlooks the job of an educator to really make necessary changes for.
I believe these changes will help our teacher pandemic, so qualified teachers who love their job give quality education to the students because we all deserve it.
