He's known for being prejudiced against people of color as well as being the crass man. He's also careless and wild. This quote of his tells a lot about his character and his beliefs. Buchanan seems to believe that there is a superior race because of these books and that the superior race is those who are Nordics. Buchanan introduces her to a girl he's been cheating on Daisy with, and she calls her sister over to entertain Carraway as well. The entire chapter goes to show just what type of person Tom Buchanan is. He took his wife's cousin to another city just to meet the girl he's having an affair with, and not only that but they end up doing drugs and drinking a lot of alcohol as well. Buchanan is showing how reckless and careless he is as a person.
