Maria Teresa's diary is so important to her because it is a way for her to express her thoughts to herself. It is part of her daily schedule as they had planned along with exercises to keep their sanity. 
2. Minerva is still a leader in prison as she still tries to make change. Many of these acts she does leads her into solitary. Such as having the inmates sing the national anthem together and holding meetings, classes and discussions. Maria Teresa worries about the length her sister goes to but still admires her leadership. Maria Teresa wishes to form her own opinions and do what she believes is right not just what her sister wants.

Maria Teresa's diary is important while she is in prison because not only is that a way for her to express what is happening to her, but it is also something only for her. I think that Alvarez does a great job showing the mistreatment the women had to face in the prison, and what was expected of them by the guards. 
2. In prison, Minerva holds hunger strikes and The Little School. She tries to share the food and is put in solitary quite a bit because she is trying to stand up for herself and others. Although Mate was in prison for so long as well as endured so much, there was still positive things that occured during her time there. For example on pg. 230,  when all the women were given a time slot in which they would look out the window, Mate wanted to keep looking out but her time was up. But fortunately for her, two other cell mates offered to give Mate their time to look out the window. Another positive thing was that she found another way to hide objects thanks to her long hair.
4. While she was in prison, the guards tried many times to get the politicals to talk or to swear their loyalty to Trujillo. But unfortunately for Mate, her husband decided to do whatever Trujillo was asking of in order to save Mate. What occurred was that Mate was taken to La 40 and there they stripped her of her clothes with men watching. Then they brought in her husband, who beaten in front of her eyes all the while she was begging them to stop. After that, they made her husband watch as she was electrocuted until he finally decided to give in. After that word spread on how Leonardo was a traitor and it hurt Mate deeply and knew her sister would feel betrayed by her own family. Near the end of the chapter when Maria Teresa is talking to the OAS, she purposely chooses to protect Santiclo, a guard who is friendly to them, while Minerva would have focused more on the principles.
6. Minerva is outspoken and the obviously symbol for the opposition against Trujillo, willing to take bold and obviously risky moves of rebellion such as handing out crosses or encouraging people to sing the national anthem, while Maria Teresa also shares her hate for the dictator, but is more reserved and sentimental, and cares about people, such as the friendly guard. It is also important to her because writing her feelings down makes her feel better. Alvarez examines women’s issues both internal and external. She shows internal by showing how all the mothers are missing their children and how everyone is missing their family. She shows external when she mentions how their body is changing due to being in prison, like some of their menstrual periods stopping due to stress.

2) Minerva makes herself a leader by letting people join their meeting and discussions  about politics, she sent up a mini school that meets everyday(except Sunday), and she sets up three cardinal rules among the politicals. She also initiates little acts of rebellion here and their. I can see that Mate respects Minerva and admires her, but she also is unsure about a lot of the decisions Minerva  makes to stand her ground, like refusing to accept the pardon.
