Children need to keep reading to achieve fluency in reading. To read fluently means the reader has automaticity in word recognition and expressive reading. If the children can read fluently, they will move from decoding words to trying to comprehend the meaning of the words and sentences. When teachers read to model fluency, we shouldn't ask questions or explain, we need to read a big passage or page before we pause to demonstrate fluent reading. 3 strategies to improve comprehension is Pre-reading: Introducing the picture, asking questions about the picture and letting children predict the story, introducing the book title, author and illustrator. During reading: Read with inflection, varying our tone according to the story, having different voice for different roles. Asking questions. After reading: We can ask the children what happened, the characters, setting, plot, solution, how the characters feel, etc.

In today's lesson I learned about the various strategies that go in hand in hand with reading aloud. One strategy that stayed in my mind was praising children for asking questions during read aloud sessions. Children will be more present and engaged in the storytelling.
