Talk-stories that fuel the narrator's emotions about being a female Chinese American include the idea that white people in America are ghosts. This perception reveals to Kingston that she is not like everyone else and is different as she is part of both Chinese and now American culture. She says, "I could hardly walk, limping my way around the White Ghosts and their cars" (Kingston 97). Kingston seems to be almost struggling as she is assimilating to America and its culture.

The talk-stories that fueled the narrator's fears about being a female Chinese American could be the story of Fa Mulan. She explains how hard it was for Mulan to be a woman in this society, and how she had to overcome a lot in order to become a warrior. She couldn't just be like the rest of the men and fight for her family. This shows Kingston how difficult it may be for her to be a female in America. On page 53 Kingston says "What we have in common are the words at our backs. The idioms for revenge are 'report a crime' and 'report to five families.'". This quote shows how she is comparing herself to Mulan and how the story is impacting her opinion of females in America.

One of the talk-stories that fuels these emotions is the story on page 95. The Americans stoned a crazy lady from the village because they suspected her of being a Japanese spy. This talk-story caused her to be wary of her surroundings because she feared that this might happen to her. She is careful in everything she does because she is unsure of what is out of the cultural norms of an unknown society.

One of the big talk-stories that fuel these emotions is the story that her mother tells Kingston about the slave she bought. In this story, Brave Orchid illustrates how many girls are given away to be slaves because they are not considered to be worth as much. It shows her fear because Kingston does not want to be stuck being a slave, and wants to be more than that. She does not want to be confined to being a slave just because she is a girl, and wants more for herself. The quote, "Among the sellers with their ropes, cages, and water tanks were the sellers of little girls (Kingston 79)," shows how it was a normal thing in China to sell girls because of their lack of worth.

A talk-story in this chapter that fueled the fear in Kingston was her mothers journey to becoming a doctor. She faced many things the Kingston would most likely face including sexism and racism. At this time, the Chinese were looked at as different. This is worse for Kingston because she had to find out were she fit in while being born in America but have a Chinese background. She did not know what she would have to face in the world. Pages 107-109 her and her mother talk about how they are slowly becoming more apart of the society around them.

Kingston's mother told Kingston many stories about ghosts, so Kingston began to see the white people as ghosts. Because she saw the white people as ghosts, Kingston realized that she was different and treated differently than the white Americans. On page 97, Kingston said, "We used to pretend we were Newsboy Ghosts. We collected old Chinese newspapers (the Newsboy Ghost not giving us his ghost newspapers)." As a child, Kingston pretended to be one of the white people because of the way that they left her out and discriminated against her. The only way that Kingston was able to feel like she was fitting in with the Americans was by pretending to be them.

The talk story that had the biggest impact was the story about the baby born without the anus and the girl baby. "One child born without an anus was left in the outhouse so that the family would not have to hear it cry...The midwife or a relative would take the back of a girl baby's head in her hand and turn her face into the ashes" (Kingston 86). This shows that women are oppressed. This also shows Kingston that is oppressed just because of her gender. This led Kingston to act out and go against her culture. This story fueled many emotions in Kingston.

The story that likely stirred these emotions was the one about the crazy Japanese woman on page 95. This likely scared Kingston due to the woman's quick prosecution. On page 95, a villager denies Kingston's mother's claim of the woman's craziness by saying "she's a spy. a spy for the Japanese." Because the woman was different in a stressful environment, she was scrutinized unfairly.

I think that the talk story about the Woman Warrior had certain aspects that scared Kingston about being a female Chinese American. At the end of the story, Kingston says "My American life has been such a disappointment" (Kingston 45). After hearing this story, Kingston believes that this is the only way to be successful. She is fearful that if she does not life up to be a warrior, she will never have any power. This story has told her that women do not have a lot of opportunities. In America, she has not become a mold of the story, and is therefore disappointed.

Kingston has fears about being a Chinese American because on page 95, a women wearing a mirrored headress was stoned to death because other people outside her culture thought her to be a Japanese spy. This scared Kingston because she felt since her culture is different than the typical American life, she would be singled out more, possibly even hurt. On page 98, the reader finds out that ghosts are the white Americans that do not speak Chinese. These people scare her and she has trouble with mixing her American and Chinese cultures.
