They protested the Catholic church for not following the word of God and believed that Catholics were impure. Puritans ended up leaving and sailing to America to escape persecution from the Church. They established the Massachussets colony to build a religious utopia governed by a theocracy. These accusations started with a group of young girls who accused a slave named Titiba of practicing witchcraft on them and causing the Devil to tempt them into eternal damnation and servitute. They went around many towns claiming to be able to see the work of the Devil and accusing many people for what is believed to have been for attention or a thrill. Ironically, during these trials one of the ways to get out of being executed was to admit to being a witch, then your punishment was being judged by God. The idea was invented by John Winthrop, a devout Puritan who believed that the world needed an example of a pure civilization. A pure civilization is one that is governed under god in a theocracy. In these towns, Puritans ended up establishing colleges such as Harvard and Yale to teach the word of God.
