King Arthur got word that Sir Modred wanted to fight him and they did. At the first battle King Arthur fought, Sir Modred fled. Sir Modred asked for another battle and they both agreed. This battle was scheduled for another night. The night before the battle King Arthur had a strange dream. Sir Gawain told him not to fight Sir Modred and wait until a month to fight him. Once a moth passes Sir Launcelot will have defeated Sir Modred. King Arthur listened to his dream and made a truce with Sir Modred. At the signing of the truce, both knights thought the other would commit treachery. Both Sir Modred and Sir Arthur told their armies to start the war if anyone drew their sword. One soldier got bitten by a snake and drew his sword to defend accidently. The alarms of both armies sounded and the war begun.

When the fight broke, both knights returned to their armies. There was a long day of fighting and both armies fought until one was destroyed. At the end of the day, Sir Modred's army had fallen but not him. King Arthur's nobles told him not fight today and reminded him of the dream. He refused and went on to fight. Sir Modred wounded King Arthur through the skull. The nobles said that it would be best to get Arthur to the nearest town. While trying to carry him, Sir Lucas' intestines broke due to his wound and he died. King Arthur and Sir Lucas' brother Sir Bedivere wept.

King Arthur told Sir Bedivere to stop crying. He told the noble to take his sword (Excalibur) and throw it in the lake, and tell him what he saw. Bedivere obeyed his command and took it to the lake but did not throw it in, as it was too beautiful. When he returned the king asked him what he saw and Bedivere said he saw the waves moving. King Arthur knew that Bedivere did not obey his command and told him to do what he commanded. Bedivere failed to do this again and King Arthur told him to do it for the third time. Sir Bedivere did what King Arthur asked him to do and he told King Arthur what he saw. He than carried the King to the edge of the water, where he was taken to Avalon. As Sir Bedivere was walking back he saw a weeping hermit kneeling at a tomb. Sir Bedivere found out it was the Archbishop of Canterbury that had been thrown away by Sir Modred.

Sir Bedivere asked the Archbishop whose tomb that was. The archbishop said he doesn't know and that 100 ladies brought the body and buried it, and also gave the Archbishop one-thousand bezants. Sir Bedivere realized it was King Arthur's tomb and told the archbishop. He also asked the archbishop if he could stay there and end his days in fasting and prayer. There they both spend their days as hermits. In many parts of Britain, it is believes that King Arthur did not die and will come back to win the glory of the Holy Cross, but the Sir Thomas Malory does not believe this. Sir Thomas Malory said he would rather let King Arthur lay in Glastonbury peacefully.
