This response will be two paragraphs. For your first, here is your focus: At the end of Chapter 15, Holden describes how he relates to Mercuito in Romeo and Juliet. Do you see this similarity? Why does Holden say he relates to him? Do you agree? Please cite textual evidence in your response. If you've forgotten who Mercuito is, please feel free to research the character. In your second paragraph, please explain a character in literature that you've related to and why. by Vannah Scarborough

I know Mercutio fairly well from studying Romeo and Juliet and I have no idea how he relates to Mercutio. We read Romeo and Juliet in the 9th grade. He somewhat resembles Mercutio in the fact that he is very whitty. I also think it is interesting how he blames Romeo and Juliet for Mercutio's death when it was Tybalt who shot him. However, That reminds me of Jane and Stradlater he might relate to Mercutio because he blames Jane and Stradlater for his depressed feeling and his sadness.
I have related to multiple characters in literature, but I think that I relate to Scout in TKM and Holden in Catcher in the Rye. So since we are reading about Holden I'll talk about Scout.
I relate to Scout because she lives in the South has a very smart father and she has lived in the same place all her life like me. I also relate to her a lot because she loses her innocence by watching her hometown and the place that she loves and has lived at for all her life turn disgusting. she sees it in a new light because of Tom Robinson's wrongful conviction. She sees her hometown for what it truly is and she sees the true nature of people. However, she finds herself more thankful for the genuine people in the world that can find something beautiful in the ordinary; like Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose. I honestly relate to Scout because the school that I went to since first grade closed when I was in sixth grade and well it made me appreciate it more. When the school closed it made me realize how much of a blessing it was to me and my family. I also realized how much the people there impacted my life and that school will forever be apart of me.

Holden relates to Mercutio in a way that is different than being like him already. Holden aspires to be like Mercutio and have his qualities that are depicted through his character in romeo and juliet. Mercutio is courageous, unpredictable,
outspoken, and supremely confident. Holden says he relates to him because it's what he wants to be as a person to others around him. But the reality is he will never be like mercutio if he doesn't get help for his mental symptoms and figure out how to be better than he already is.
A character that i relate to the most is from a graphic novel, it's called Tokyo Ghoul. The main character is a normal boy in the first book that lives a normal life until his world is changed forever after an accident to where he is turned into a half-ghoul. To me this character is special because he keeps fighting on even after becoming the worst thing he possibly could in society.

At the end of chapter 15, Holden says that Mercutio is, "very smart and entertaining and all" (145). He also says that it "drives him crazy if somebody gets killed- especially somebody very smart and entertaining" (145). I don't see anything between Holden and Mercutio that's shockingly similar. I know that Holden thinks of himself as smart and entertaining this way so maybe that is why he relates to Mercutio. I think that this could also serve as foreshadowing that Holden will be killed and it won't be his fault, or he wont think that its his fault.
The character that I relate the most to in literature (that I can think of right now) is Jack Zimmerman from a series called Check Please. Jack is a guy in college that has a huge legacy to live up to. He is given immense pressure by his parents to do good and be successful, but sometimes he doesn't do that. When he doesn't, he gets incredibly stressed out, but he can rely on his friends to help pick him up. There are times when he cant control himself and freaks out but immediately apologizes after.

In chapter 14, Holden talks to the two nuns about Romeo and Juliet. Holden says he isn't much of a fan of Romeo and Juliet but he likes the character Mercutio and feels as if he can relate to him. When Holden is talking about Mercutio he says, "The thing is, it drives me crazy if somebody gets killed-especially somebody very smart and entertaining and all - and its somebody else's fault" (145). The main reason Holden feels like he can relate to Mercutio besides thinking he is entertaining is because he feels mad that Mercutio was killed by somebody else and it wasn't his fault. Holden can relate t this since his brother died and it seems like a part of Holden has died after his brothers death which is why Holden can relate to Mercutio from being impacted by other people.
Just as Holden feels like he can relate to Mercutio I feel like I can relate to Peeta from the Hunger Games. I can relate to Peeta because he is nice and kind of hold backs on things throughout the book. Peeta was one of the characters that thought through stuff before making stupid decisions which I can relate to.

I don't personally believe Mercutio and Holden are all that similar, but I see how Holden relates to him. See, Holden believes his biggest problems aren't his fault, just like Mercutio's death (caused to due to Romeo's cowardice). He claims that, "Romeo and Juliet, at least it was their own fault" (124), implying Holden believes his own problems aren't his fault. This is where I disagree. Sure, he was cause a lot of trauma because of Allie's untimely death, but ultimately he must take responsibility for his own feelings. All the fights he gets into are because of him, etc.
A character I've related to is Jonas from the Giver. See, Jonas is made out to be extremely special during the beginning of the book, but in time we come to realize he's just human. He simply has the (not even that rare) power to receive memories. Jonas is just simply the one to take action on what he learns. I felt like I understood his each and every action throughout the novel. I felt his exact pain and sadness during his revelations on how horrific his world is. I could understand his message to the reader about enjoying the little happy moments in life, and that they should always overpower the painful ones-- and if they can't, a friend can help you through.

Holden relates to Mercutio because he is in between like Holden is with his emotions like Mercutio because he is in between the family's while being Romeo's best friend. Mercutio dies for defending Romeo just like how Holden's personality and soul dies when he looses his brother and how they both blame everything else then them selves for what they are put in; "It was Romeo's fault. I mean I liked him the best in the play, old Mercutio. I don't know. all those Montagues and Capulets there all right I guess."(145)

I relate to John Snow because he's stuck with a life he hates abut then a life he really likes but doesn't know what he wants to do with both but ends up trying find his true purpose in life and that's kind of where I'm at in life I just don't know where I'm heading in my direction of life.

Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet is character that is close friends to Romeo and is killed by Tybalt. Mercutio is a the character that supplies the comic relief of the play, always being sarcastic and making puns and jokes. Mercutio also uses his lines to extinguish any romantic sentiments and self love in the play. In this way Holden is just like Mercutio. Holden is always making jokes and lying to people for the fun of it. Holden also seems to stop any kind of romantic scenes with his demeaner and seems to have no kind of self love.
The character in literature that I think I am like is Banquo from Macbeth. Banquo was Macbeth's best friend and was with him when they encountered the three witches who profecied that Banquo would have royal descendance. Banquo told Macbeth not to believe in what the witches said because it was not in their best interest. Banquo ends up being killed by his best friend Macbeth. I think that I relate to Banquo because he could read between the lines into what was wrong and what was good and staid strong in that. He was also a loyal friend to Macbeth until the end even though he was betrayed.

He said that he related more with Mercurio especially because "he was very smart and entertaining and all" (145). Holden seems like a kid who likes to cause problems but his intentions were never bad. He is forced to deal with the death of his brother and it seems to be slowly killing him, similar to mercutio dying because of Romeo.
I am really struggling to connect a character with myself in the books that I've read.

I can definitely see how Holden and Mercutio are similar. Mercutio is a playful character and he’s very intelligent. In Romeo and Juliet Mercutio is portrayed as a cunning and and witty character. Holden is a witty person, he has his fake names and his jokes and he always knows the right thing to say to get his way. Holden denies it but he’s a very smart person. He tries to fail on purpose but he could do very well if he wanted to. When Holden describes Mercutio he says “but Mercutio, he was—it’s hard to explain.” (145). This quote may not seem like much but that’s exactly how I would describe Holden, hard to describe.
A character that I’ve felt very similar to is Holden and yea we’re reading about him right now but I really get his point of view, and I’m actually enjoying reading this book because I understand the main character so well. When Holden makes his jokes about things and stays hidden I really understand that and I just get Holden as a character. I understand his sarcasm and they way he thinks. I think he’s portrayed very well and it’s very clear what kind of character he’s meant to be. Holden is a very complicated person and it takes a lot to really understand and him and figure out who he really is. I think Holden is in denial about a lot of things and that’s not an easy place to be in, that’s one of the main reasons for the fake personas he creates.
