The challenge is people's current circumstances at home. I stay positive and try to teach looking at the bright side of things. This is not always easy, like when a student's only parent has to live away from home for weeks at a time because she moved hours away to the only job she could find during the pandemic, or the kid who's parent is at the hospital, or the kid who had to move away from home to avoid getting sick from COVID in a house where everybody else is sick. I give these kids extra time and support. I also have one kid with a parent who has cancer. He hasn't been loggin in at all.

Thank you, thank you for giving us Seesaw. It is a very intuitive platform and allows for all kinds of self-expression in different media. My kids can do all kinds of work and have fun while showing off through Seesaw. It is a great tool for digital portfolios and documenting language development.

I have a habit of learning the correct pronounciation of all my students names, and I work hard to get it right. During my drop-in lessons with primary students we play music games that are emotionally engaging. Also I spend a little extra time with at least one student per class session (we meet twice per month). In my live band sessions I encourage my students to stay after class for up to 15 extra minutes if they have questions. I have also done a few 1:1 lessons during this time.

The most challenging part of emotional engagement is encouraging the black boxes to participate. I never know if I'm getting through to them. Sometimes I feel like they are completely disengaged and it worries me that I am not able to connect with them. I say good morning to each student every day and they can say good morning back or wave. I allow them time talk in the morning as well. They like that. If a student needs it, I will meet with them privately during independent work time. I also try to do artistic activities together where we listen to music while drawing/painting. They love this and tell me so.

I still have students that have very inconsistent attendance. A couple that don't come at all, and a few that come sporadically and never stay a full day when they do.

Many times my kids pop into the camera. I think kids like that because they see that I am also juggling and my kids are also juggling distance learning.
