"Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley is about a young scientist named Victor Frankenstein in 1600's Europe. During his research, he intentionally animated a constructed human body in an attempt to further progress science. His experiment goes rogue, escapes his laboratory, and proceeds to wreak havoc because of his lust for human-like compassion and love. Victor's relatives are helplessly targeted because of his non-compliance with the monster's demand to create a female companion.

"In a fit of enthusiastic madness I created a rational creature and was bound toward him to assure as far as was in my power, his happiness and well-being. This was my duty, but there was another still paramount to that. My duties towards the beings of my own species had greater claims to my attention because they included a greater proportion of happiness or misery. Urged by this view, I refused, and I did right in refusing to create a companion for the first creation. He showed unparalleled malignity and selfishness in evil; he destroyed my friends; he devoted to destroying beings who possessed exquisite sensations, happiness, and wisdom; nor do I know where this thirst for vengeance may end."

In the story, Victor sought to progress science by creating a new being, but this new being was ultimately his downfall/enemy, leading to the deaths of Victor's friends and eventually himself. These two passages perfectly sum up his experience. However, the text based version of the novel performs this scene much better than the graphic novel the images in the comic does not sufficiently recollect his previous encounters well.

She was there, lifeless and inanimate, thrown across the bed, her head hanging down and her pale and distorted features half covered by her hair. Everywhere I turn I see the same figure–her bloodless arms and relaxed form flung by the murderer on its bridal beir. Could I behold this and live? Alas! Life is obstinate and clings closest where it is most hated. For a moment only did I lose recollection; I fell senseless on the ground...

I escaped from them to the room where lay the body of Elizabeth, my love, my wife, so lately living, so dear, so worthy. She had been moved from the posture in which I had first beheld her, and now, as she lay, her head upon her arm and a handkerchief thrown across her face and neck, I might have supposed her asleep. I rushed towards her and embraced her with ardour, but the deadly languor and coldness of the limbs told me that what I now held in my arms had ceased to be Elizabeth whom I had loved and cherished."

The climax is portrayed significantly better in the text version of Frankenstein than the graphic novel. Every thought of Victor as he sees his wife lifeless on the floor provides the reader with much more despair than in the graphic novel. The graphic novel variant cannot compete with the literary expression and emotional description that the text-based version easily can. Although the graphic novel pictures the scene well, the text based version makes us feel there in the scene and enlightens us with every little thought of Victor.

"Wretch!" I said. "It is well that you come here to whine over the desolation that you have made. You throw a torch into a pile of buildings, and when they are consumed, you sit among the ruins and lament the fall. Hypocritical fiend! If he whom you mourn still lived, still would he be the object, again would he become the prey, of your accursed vengeance. It is not pity that you feel; you lament only because the victim of your malignity is withdrawn from your power."

Both of the mediums of the text provide good visual details. The graphic novel shows us the monster's visions and Walton's actions towards the monster effectively. However, although both forms are similar visually (mental/literal imaging), the text contains much more context and information about Walton's thoughts where the graphic novel does not. In addition, whole sentences, which provide significant comparison and emotional context, are left out of the graphic novel, particularly with idioms and similes. The tension between the two characters still exists, but we have more information about their feelings in the text.

Which is the Better Version: Comic or Text?

Overall, the textual version of "Frankenstein" is the better choice for understanding and fully immersing yourself in the novel's world. Although the graphic novel flaunts ease-of-use with its comical imagery, the original text of the story provides significantly more detail overall and paints a better mental image of the story. In addition, the graphic novel falls victim to artist interpretation, which is an author's choice to include additional, non-canonical information. With this alternate interpretation of the text, we as readers imagine something completely different from what the comic depicts, which can reduce comprehension and lead to an overall decrease in enjoyment and appreciation of the text.
With all this information in mind, we can confidently say that the textual version of the novel is superior to the graphic novel variant.
