This is an example of the type of Padlet I'd like you to create by the end of the course. Note the ten prompts I have included, and include these in your final version. Each post should be no fewer than 50 words.

The book cover has a gun, an ashtray, a cup of coffee, and some bullets. It says Secret File no.1 on the bottom left corner. I think that these images are included on the book's cover because it is a spy novel, and these items indicate the dangerous and lonely life that the main character may lead.

Len Deighton was born in England in 1929, and was a food writer as well as a spy novelist, beginning in the early '60's. He wrote his Harry Palmer spy series in response to and to compete with Ian Fleming's James Bond books. His interest in cooking and computers factors heavily into his novels.

3. Describe the main characters of the book. What are their relationships? How do they interact?

The main character and narrator of the novel is not named, but in the film version he is called Harry Palmer. He does not have many acquaintances in the film, but he does have an interesting relationship with his boss, Major Dalby, who criticizes him but also supports his work. Palmer is clearly inspired by Dalby to work harder, and their relationship is similar to father and son.

This novel is unlike most other spy novels in that it is set almost entirely in London, and does not involve very much international travel, except for some scenes in Beirut. The London presented in the book is gray and rainy, and the narrator wants to be anywhere else. The book is also unique among spy novels in that it tries to be as realistic as possible when presenting the day-to-day work that a spy has to do. It seems like a lonely job.

5. Describe some of the themes introduced in the first half of the book. Make a prediction for how you think the book will end.

The book seems to be largely written in reaction to the James Bond series, which presents a spy's life as being glamorous and exciting. This book highlights the boring nature of being a spy, and focuses on the loneliness and paperwork required. Another theme is the privatisation of espionage- we are not sure exactly who Harry works for, and why they want what they want. I think that the book will end in mysterious way, with nothing solved, just like in real life.

6. Describe the book's antagonist. Remember that an antagonist can be a person, but it can also be nature, or the main character can be their own antagonist. What is the antagonists' role in your book?

The climax of the book occurs when Harry Palmer is kidnapped and taken by train to Albania to be brainwashed. I was surprised that they were going to train to Albania, because I thought Albania was in Africa, but actually it's in Eastern Europe. Because Harry is insubordinate, he is unable to be brainwashed, and shoots the antagonists instead.

Len Deighton wrote three other books in the series, two of which were also made into films. This is the series for which the author is most known, though he wrote a few cookbooks and other interesting publications. Next, I think I'd like to read some of the books that Len Deighton was drawing inspiration from, such as Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe series.
