Look over there, not over here.... People use red herrings all the time, sometimes without even knowing they are doing it. This picture shows a Mom using a treat as the red herring to distract her daughter from whatever toy the daughter wants to buy. What? How? Why? Good questions! It takes a special kind of hunting dog to stay focused, regardless of all the other smells in the air so the English fox hunter came up with the idea to use the stinky red herring to teach their hunting dogs to stay on the scent of the fox and not be distracted by another smell.
