The same day as I took the first photo mentioned, I took another of a young boy running to jump in a puddle. His head is bent, focused on his goal, and the happy look on his face shows how carefree he is in this moment. The abandoned parking lot behind him provides an emotional contrast to the joy shown by the subject.

This photo of a railing at a train station shows a cool example of how foreground and background can combine to make a visually appealing picture. In the foreground, the shiny rail, reflected in the tiled wall, slopes down the steps away from the viewer. As the eye follows its path, it also notices a person, laden with backpacks, walking down the stairs in the background.

A couple months ago, I went to the Boston Science March and took a photo of a man holding out a bubble wand for a little girl to blow a bubble. She is so short that he has to crouch down, and in addition to the tender look on his face this adds a caring feeling to the picture. Her oversized jacket and the way she hangs her arms at her sides creates a cute, helpless aspect. The busy crowd behind them makes me think about how there are thousands of decisive moments like these that nobody else sees and it makes it all the more special.

I think my most meaningful picture was the one of the man holding out the bubbles for the little girl to blow. I really like this photo because it shows the warmth of human nature; neither of the subjects really knew each other, but they were enjoying life together in each other’s company. The dynamic between children and adults is something I would like to photograph more in the future, and the way this picture turned out has fueled that dream.

At the Harvard Museum of Natural History, I was standing on a balcony running around and above the main exhibit. I noticed that the lines made by the exhibits all seemed to direct to an empty space. I asked my mom to stand there and went back upstairs to take the photo. The diagonal lines of the exhibit cases as well as the sloping downward lines of the skeletons above her all direct the viewer’s eye to the subject in the center.

In one photo of the Harvard bookstore, I realized that the college banners on the wall were initially too dark and the ceiling was too light. I burned the ceiling so the viewer’s eye would be directed downward, towards the lamps. I also dodged the banners so that the viewer would notice them as their eye traveled downward.

I was standing on the upper balcony when I noticed that the overhanging lamps were placed in an aesthetically pleasing line travelling away from the viewer. In the photo, they work their way from the right side to the center, providing visual satisfaction. Their asymmetry makes the symmetry of the bookshelves and books below more interesting.

The skylights in our house mean that when it’s noon on a sunny day, light streams in directly onto the dining room table, creating interesting light effects. One such day, my dad and I were eating lunch and I noticed that the overhead sun threw deeply contrasting shadows onto his face and hair.
