  • In 1492, he sailed across the Atlantic from Spain in the Santa Maria, with the Pinta and the Niña ships alongside, hoping to find a new route to India.
  • His major accomplishment was the discovery of Hispaniola where he also helped establish permanent settlements. This led to the beginning of Spanish colonization in the New World.

  • The names of his ships were San Gabriel, the Sao Rafael, and the Berrio. The fourth ship did not have a name as it was only used for storage.
  • He was commissioned by the Portuguese king to find a maritime route to the East. His success in doing so proved to be one of the more instrumental moments in the history of navigation.
  •  Vasco da Gama represented Portugal 
  • His most significant accomplishment was sailing from Portugal to India in 1497.

  • Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to sail all the way around the world. He also discovered a passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean that is today called the Straits of Magellan. 
  • He had five ships which were called the Trinidad,  the San Antonio, the Victoria, the Conception, and the Santiago.
  • Ferdinand Magellan represented Spain 
  • He set out from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of five ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands. En route he discovered what is now known as the Strait of Magellan and became the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean.
