Information about pedagogical documentation can be found starting on page 27 of this document. It is there that Carol Ann Wien goes into detail about how early childhood educators can create quality documentation and what questions we should ask ourselves in the process.

Pages 21-22 of this document provide information explaining what pedagogical documentation is, what it is for, and how to do it. It is an excellent recourse for both educators and parents.

"Pedagogical documentation helps to find meaning in what children do and what they experience. It is:

a way to value children’s experiences and include their perspectives;
a way to make children’s learning and understanding of the world around them visible to the children themselves;
a process for educators to co-plan with children and with families;
a means of sharing perspectives with parents and colleagues." (2014. Pg 21).

Pedagogical documentation is the process of recording the actions or words of a child to learn how they think and learn. It answers questions that educators may ask about a child while making their learning visible. (HDLH. 2014). It can take many different forms. It can be pictures, written notes, videos, portfolios, and presentation boards.

This is a good example of documentation. It includes pictures of the children, notes to explain what is happening in the pictures, as well as quotes from the children during this time. It displays the learning that occurred through this activity and how an educator may be able to scaffold this activity into further learning. Documentation like this is useful to post in the room for parents to see, for educators to keep and look back on to further scaffold, or even for children to look at.

This documentation is displayed in a portfolio with pictures and, activities, and drawings that the child has done. Creating a portfolio for each child is helpful for educators to keep and continue filling through the year. This allows them to look back on the child's progress, where the child may need extra help, and how the child excelled the best. It is also great for parents to see and look back on as well.
