At my new school (IB), I feel we are great at connecting language and literature through the grades, but there are very few interdisciplinary units going on. There are no meetings with anyone in other academic areas (except grade-level meetings, but at those we just discuss students).

We have several new people on the team and everyone got shuffled to new grade levels, so we fact the challenge of doing EVERYTHING from scratch this year while trying to achieve IB certification for the DP program.  It is hard to make sure we focus on our daily teaching and the engagement of the students and not get distracted with checklists.

It is also a challenge to compile all of the resources for a successful unit - inquiry is wonderful, but the Internet is a wild and complicated place if you just set middle schoolers loose without enough direction.

What's the balance? We are in the United States so that makes sense, but shouldn't we also be culturally sensitive considering that so many students come from places all around the world?

This is tricky to 'hold' within the scheme of the unit and its time pressures of ensuring that the skills are taught and the knowledge understood (so to speak) that would allow for this exploration.
