         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think this could have been because immigrants had *just* settled in their new homes and weren't ready to give up their home languages yet. Perhaps over time as the US developed its identity, people started disliking the "other-ness" that speaking a different language provided? Basically US nationalism might have been forming and people thought that speaking other languages harmed it?</div>]]></description>
