For most of us, the most challenging part about our job is not necessarily the teaching, but the time we spend managing student behavior. What may seem surprising is what we struggle with the most; it isn’t the children who misbehave that end up wearing us out—the consequences for these scenarios are relatively straightforward—rather, we painstakingly tussle with different ways to manage the students who complete their assignments in a matter of minutes.
An effective way to maximize gifted learning under the radar is by implementing choice boards, or as some call them learning menus.

Basically, you take a Tic-Tac-Toe board and fill it up with a variety of activities. Students will then complete rows of the board according to their interests, just like in the popular game. You can create unique boards for students who are working at different levels or encourage groups of kids to tackle specific rows if you feel it’d suit their difficulty level best. Any way you choose, it’s a simple and fun way to meet the needs of all your students.

I would also give gifted children the possibility to work on topics they are very interested in. When I taught in first grade every child had a "ME" book. When they were finished with their work, they could write, draw, cut and glue.... whatever ... in this book. Sometimes they brought pictures from home... they also had the possibility to work with the computer and print something for this book.

They see how to explore, learn and learn while having fun.
Out-of-class activities reinforce by supporting classroom communication. For example, a teacher who tries to teach local history in a social studies lesson can perform an effective and fun learning by visiting students in the city's special and historical places. Especially life science provides a very effective and permanent learning in science. At the same time, it helps students to work with the group, to benefit from environmental opportunities, to love to learn, to be open and willing to innovate.

Excursions, observation, homework and interviews can be given as examples. The active participation of the students in these activities will ensure that their learning is permanent, not only by hearing, but also by learning by touching and seeing, which will contribute to all areas of development of the student.

In order to achieve the maximized development of all pupils, account must be taken of individual differences and the learning context, which implies the flexibility of school organization, teaching methods, resource management and curriculum. Thus, the structure of a gifted education program should enable acceleration, complexity and deepening of the curriculum, as well as all the means necessary for its implementation. The school is the place par excellence for the implementation of educational policies and where the problems of children with above average abilities must be placed. Educating gifted students requires adapting curricular content as well as teaching and learning methodologies. Intellectually stimulating and challenging activities should be used, these should promote the autonomy of learning and thinking, ie the use of metacognitive strategies and self-regulated learning. The cognitive stimulation of convergent to divergent thinking (creativity) should also be extended, educational processes should extend beyond the cognitive and academic area, also encompassing the emotional and social areas of gifted students.
The use of differentiated teaching and learning processes, the reference of special and specific educational needs, the elaboration and application of curricula and activities that fully respond to the intra-individual needs of these students, promoting the optimization of acquired skills and the development of skills emerging economies, foster the full and balanced evolution of their full potential.

However, class-clown disruptions and other forms of disrespect triggered by boredom are not acceptable classroom behaviour and Bryan has to understand that. It’s important to point out that such outbursts are disrespectful. A willingness to interrupt your teaching shows a lack of regard for you as well as his classmates. But the class clown is only thinking of himself and the attention the moment can bring him. So you must tread lightly. You must approach the situation shrewdly and strategically rather than impulsively. You must handle it in such a way that minimizes the disruption, yet at the same time holds the student accountable, restores respect for you, and lessens the chances of it happening again. Try to wait until silence is restored.

Daniela, Italy The theme of plus-rotation and potential is more relevant than ever, given that the European Directives and our Ministry of Education strongly insist on the need to work to create the conditions that can accommodate and encourage the development of our human capital as much as possible. On the other hand, the Italian context is currently one of the few remaining, which does not yet have specific research and intervention programs.The methodologies used that we develop and recommend at school are certainly not designed to promote the culture of the small genius but with the concrete objective of making sure that the school gives all children the right opportunity to mature.Therefore, the child is the center of the learning path, and starts from the recognition of differences as a value. Support methodologies include abbreviated study paths, advanced level activities, differentiated educational offer, extracurricular activities that allow to develop skills in a specific sector. The goal is to know and recognize the potential and talents, to make them emerge, grow and express, becoming a resource for everyone and for the group.

According to other children, these students who do and finish tasks quickly should not be left empty in the classroom. When they are empty, you may face a variety of behavioral problems. I think that the teachers of these children should plan their lessons according to their intelligence level, and they should design challenging tasks where they can have a pleasant time. In addition, schools can create areas where such students can engage in activities.

And what I would say is no matter how gifted they are they remain kids with kids needs. The most difficult thing is that...considering their speech, understanding of the world it’s easy to transform them into mini adults forgetting they are kids. Yet we have to adapt to their vivacity which can surprise us but we must not fall in the trap of asking them too much because they’ll understand... they won’t.. A child remains a child no matter how gifted he is...and even if they are bright and shining they are like cas fragile as crystal

I think gifted students are somehow forgotten in today's shool. We concentrate ourselves to all sorts of special educational needs students and we simply forget the gifted ones. I always feel gilty in their eyes because I feel I simply can't do much for them. All right, I can bring some extra work for them but they are alone in that as other children are not able to participate. Then, I don't have much time for them and I somehow know they'll manage without me. I'm asking myself: Is it fair to spend so much time on SEN students while gifted students are left to find their own ways?

I completely agree with Marija from Croatia that gifted and talented students nowadays are somehow forgotten in today's school. I think that are usually lost in mainstream education because so much accent is put forward only on working with SEN students. Another reason is the strict curriculum and the unwillingness of a lot of teachers (and schools) to tailor the curriculum to individual needs of these students.
When I have gifted/talented students in my classes I usually try to get them involved in different extra curricular activities so they get the chance to develop their individual needs outside classes.

I met some children with similar characteristics but never a child so particular and so talented. I have a nephew who has a real musical talent and was very good at school too. Now he is in New York and works as a musician.
I sense that the life of a gifted child is not easy because most people (especially adults) can not accept that there is someone smarter than them.
However ... what can be done for these children. It is important because, for example, the very good child I once had at school, when he grew up, stopped studying, He had not found the right path. And he was a particularly troubled child, but he was the smartest in my class.
I learned to divide the tasks and to give these children only a part of the task, the most difficult.
When we introduce a new topic to the class, we decide which are the most difficult points. Generally 5 tasks are chosen, exemplifying the most difficult concepts. We write them on the blackboard, putting the first one on display
maximum difficulty, (The hardest thing first). Students who immediately understand the most complicated concept, adequately carrying out the proposed exercise, do not have to do the rest of the task, but can devote themselves to other chosen activities.
from them. Those who, however, fail to complete the "more difficult" exercise
first, they are then invited to perform all the exercises.

Then it is useful to compact the curriculum, that is not to bore these children by doing things they already know how to do, which they have already consolidated, so ...
We establish the learning objectives or standards that all pupils must achieve. We offer the possibility of voluntary pre-tests for those who believe they have already learned or build an alternative path for those pupils who learn what they need in less time than others. We plan and offer program extensions
for children who take advantage of opportunities for compaction. We eliminate every exercise, practice, verification for pupils who already have a mastery over the contents. We keep a record as faithful as possible of the compaction activities.
.

I personally work with children with SEN. Colleagues in the school have gifted students who try to pay special attention and give them more difficult and motivating tasks. A great part should also have parents to recognize the affinities of child and guide him in that direction. Teachers in the school have no easy task because it happens that students with difficulty and gifted students also have the same class, and everyone should be equally devoted to it. It would be much easier to work in such a classroom if classrooms are better equipped with information technology, but unfortunately it does not depend on us teachers or the school itself, but the founder who is not able to enable each school at the same time to the same extent.

Students like Bryan are rare in my school. I think it's a big challenge for every teacher and parents to live or teach such a child and make them happy. Maybe it could be harder than for other types of SEN students because of their developed critical sense. I think that in this scenario, teachers have to be real "listening spaces". In my opinion these students needs to talk, to express themselves and, above all, to be sure that they will be listened.

From time to time, I get students like Bryan in my classes, and do recognize similar behaviours in them. The truth is, when you have a class of 30 or more, it is not easy to keep them all focused, even less at all times, and again, even less when quite a few of them may have their own specific needs. Anyway, let us consider Bryan’s Case per se, since that is our purpose, this time.

Bryan’s Case:

- he usually learns easily and quickly, sometimes he doesn’t even need to be taught, because things immediately make sense in his mind;

- he wonders a lot and thinks of things beyond what we may see (how they may be inside, how they can be built, etc.);

- he may not follow the rules, or even get very good grades;

- he is smart, advanced, talks very well for his age, likes to read and ask questions, but sometimes it is hard for him to make friends, because some kids of his age do not understand him;

- he is a natural leader.

As a teacher, I might respond by:

1. learning about his interests, letting him focus and explore them;

2. definitely keeping him busy, by:

- making him read a lot, watch educational vídeos, listen to audio books, and then maybe try book talks, film talks, etc.;

- making him share what he had read about, listened to, watched, learned;

- using games (Minecraft, for instance) or challenges;

3. sharing events or presenting problems and teach him about decision-making, letting him present ideas to solve them;
4. if he proved to be good at it and if the others accepted it he could even become a kind of teacher's helper, by helping colleagues who had more trouble learning, doing exercises, etc.

The gifted student necessarily has a good academic performance. However, negative attitudes toward school, as well as curriculum and educational strategies that do not take into account individual differences, interests, learning styles, and abilities, are some of the factors that may negatively affect the performance of high potential students.
Promote creativity in the classroom, for example: Promote an environment rich in stimulation with multiple opportunities of knowledge; To construct, collectively, a climate of harmony, respect for differences and acceptance of the new; Adopt attitudes of valorization and use of mistakes and mistakes made throughout the learning process; Construct innovative teaching methodologies; To create differentiated and fun learning situations with a gradual degree of difficulty; To act, in a consistent way, in reinforcing and stimulating students' self-esteem and self-concept; To value affective expressions and encourage the use of imagination and fantasy

After listening to Bryan's experience I understand why giftedness can be considered a special educational need. I'd try to implement other abilities, like empathy, because gifted students may have relational problems and need to understand other people's reaction so as not to feel disappointed or lonely. I think that drama activities could be helpful.

I met many smart students, who could get everything quickly and then get bored eventually because their classmates needed more time. It happens more often then what we think. Some of these students end up demotivated if the teacher doesn’t think about differentiated instructions for this student. For example, teachers can give them a new task, maybe they can learn more about a specific part of the topic and then, when everyone has finished, he/she can explain it to the classmates. Gifted students, if they finisch earlier than everyone else the task, can help the teacher look for or select the materials for the next activity or project. I think that in this way they can feel more understood and work on something that motivates them instead of letting them get bored and slowed down.

Then we spend time deciding what topic and level of tasks they want and I only follow them. It is demanding, time consuming but a great chance for me to learn different things. In my country gifted children are often left out and are not thought of as sen students.

I haven’t had gifted pupils so far, but for 3 years I have a bilingual pupil (American father and Italian mother) with excellent cognitive abilities that often gets bored; so I give him more elaborate tasks, I propose him tutor roles in view of his English language competence and, sometimes, I ask him to do the teacher, asking him to prepare researches on the English language. His problem is often the behavior in the classroom, because he is easily distracted and not always able to recover the schoolworks that I give to the class.

In this way he shows superficiality and the arrogance of knowing more than the teacher. The parents want to enroll him already in the first year of middle school, but the risk is that he continues to have this attitude in a school where more self-control and autonomy are required, with activities where the content takes for granted previous knowledge that he still doesn’t have

However, he always got full points from the exams. Although he was not listening, he answered my questions whenever I asked him. For these kids, teaching them how they learn is important in my opinion. If they are aware of the metacognition skills that they can use, they can benefit from their situation more effectively.

The best approach is have a classroom with extra activities (challenges) that meet his interests. I also think the teacher could work alongside with the gifted student, he would helpt the teacher with students that are a little behind task. And why not give the gifted child a few challenges? He could present a topic of his interest to his classmates...What's important is not "kil" the motivation and curiosity. He needs his school to offer differentiation!

Differentiation in teaching is the answer not only for gifted students, but also for everyone else. As the video showed, differentiated instructions are something that all students benefit from. Of course, this is a special challenge for teachers, because it is not only necessary to prepare additional materials, but also have additional answers to many questions, or at least know how to refer to sources where something Bryan can find out. Until now, I did not have "real" gifted students, but in each class there is at least one student who learns fast, so additional material must be thought well to meet the needs of such students. I also know that there are special programs for gifted students who help them finish the class more quickly and go to the next in order continue the development and not to be bored.

I don't see this scenario as something else; I see it as a more strategic approach. As a teacher you have to plan the lessons, so why not develop deep and complex activities for high level students, like Bryan, at the same time?
This way you should plan your work at different levels: entry, advanced and extension (deeper knowledge levels), giving them a variety of ways to learn.
It will take longer in the planning phase, but in the end it is more efficient because gifted students don't feel bored, and students in difficulty receive support. Once these resources have been created, they can be used over and over again.

Sometimes I have had children who were smarter than the rest of their class, in those cases I have provided them with extra stimula and more challenging tasks. If my pupils were busy with a Project-based learning pathway great achievers had the role of Tutor/Facilitator /Organizer, this way they didn't get bored and shared their “gift” with the rest of the class. In my school there is also a project which is calle Odds and Evens according to which the most gifted students play the role of tutors of pupils with SEN and finally get extra credits and presents (computers, headphones etc).

Working with 4/5 year olds, the play based classroom lends itself to setting up a variety of problem solving activities. Encouraging the student like Bryan to solve challenges and answer open ended questions. Can they find ways to represent their findings using resources in the classroom? Can they find a way to present their work to their peers and share their knowledge and skills. I agree with colleagues who have said that there must also be importance placed and social interactions. They need to be supported in developing friendships and in turn the whole class need to show tolerance and acceptance of everyone's differences.

I never had the chance to work with gifted children. But if I could I would give them the space they need. That means that if we were in a classroom maybe gifted children could prepare a project in order to be the teacher themselves. So, they could teach us the things they know and maybe we (all the others in the classroom) didn't know. In that way I think they won't feel the classroom is boring and also all the others would be beneficial. But, in order not to feel different I would that with the other students as well. For example, as Bryan talked about planes, so the steps I would use in order to teach students about that would be: 1. wotk in teams 2. first team explains the easiest things they can find out, like why we use that and how they look like 3. second team with gifted children may present the most difficult information as air pressure and how they work for example. I think that could help a lot these children to feel part of the classroom and also understand that they are accepted from all.

We should offer these type of students just the same attention and resouces we offer to any other SEN but ,at least in Spain, they are not considered 'something to worry about' (as I Heard some colleagues said). According to current legislation we must grant our students all the resources and strategies for them to fully develop.
This means that we must allow gifted students to go a step beyond: to enrich the curriculum and if that's not enough, to extend it with contents from other grades. We must Foster investigation having in mind the students' interests. We must not neither forget the social componet, since some of these students feel that they don't fit, we must work on self-esteem.

I once had a 6 year old boy who wanted to have a speech at the town hall about ocean animals. Everybody was astonished by his presentation. At the same time it was difficult for him to find playmates so we organised interactive games which helped him establish relationships with his mates. Maybe I would try to make him present a class topic from his point of view. Maybe in that way students would be able to profit even more

Very often, gifted children find it difficult to adapt in the real world, because their world is quite different. Therefore, the goal of the teacher is to properly develop the genius abilities of a gifted child and help in adaptation in everyday life without prejudice to his personality. All this should be done in close contact with the parents of the child.

Donatella Passiatore, ItalyReading the information of the exceptional Bryan, an elementary school student, I am reminded of a student of my first year at the Liceo Scientifico where I teach. He is a very popular boy for languages, passionate about computer science, science and cartoon design. Often, my classmates refer, they distract and draw comics, or read specialized journals in Science or Computer Science. When asked why he does not follow the lesson, he replies that he already knows those things and prefers to read up on the subjects that most passionate him. My colleagues are evaluating future teaching strategies for this student with exceptional abilities. Personally, I teach Design and History of Art, I will try to make him tutoring to his companions in difficulty for the study of the History of Art and maybe even propose to make him the experience of "Prof for a day" some time in English. In addition to this, as every year I presented a project "ARTE VIVA AMONG THE CLOUDS" at School, in which children can express themselves in the language of comics or interpret live some works of art. In this way you will feel more involved and will follow, I hope, with more enthusiasm and interest. Obviously, I will monitor monthly progress and working conditions in order to intervene as necessary.

I usually direct my gifted students to prepare extra work for their friends. I ask them to prepare a game, PPT presentation, an experiment related to our topic. Gifted students love these activities. The other students enjoy their friends’ presentations a lot and participate more actively in those activities prepared by gifted students. I also ask my gifted students to keep a TOP SECRET DIARY where they ca write about all the facts about a topic that they know or they can design, create or invent a new thing and write all the details. I check those diaries regularly and talk to the students. They feel cared, valued and proud of themselves.

In the present class, the first grade, I have students who could be a gifted student. This is the first time I meet such a student (30 years of practice). I could easily compare it to Bryan. He likes to talk about everything he does not talk about at school, and I find myself in a situation where I am giving him small projects, like "how basketball was created". At the beginning of the school year, he was crying every day until I went to class. He was worried about who would take care of him that day. One day he simply said that he decided not to cry and that he could not even understand why he did it. He does not accept criticism or praise easily. There is always a question of "why," and I have to explain everything. I hope that he is really a gifted student and that I will be able to stimulate all of its capabilities to develop to the maximum.

He is usually clowning around and distracts other students until i involve him in something challenging..usually he takes part to a cooperative learning group actively and successfully. Cooperative learning is an organized and structured way to use small groups to enhance student learning and interdependence. Students are given a task, better known as an assignment, and they work together to accomplish this task. Each individual has responsibilities and is held accountable for aiding in the completion of the assignment; therefore, success is dependent on the work of everyone in the group. Cooperative learning allows discussion and critical thinking, so students learn more and remember what they've learned for a longer period of time. Cooperative learning is fun, so students enjoy it and are more motivated.

When I asked the reason of it she said that she had found her classmates very boring and could not find anything to talk with. I have a students like that. She hasAnd she felt alone. She always completed the tasks and exams very quickly. At the end her classmates started to bully her and I decided to do something for her. I communicated with a special school that designed for gifted students. It was hard to convince her family but she enrolled there. After that her family informed me about her situation. She is very happy and is not alone now

I know that just like all students, come to school to learn and be challenged. I find out their areas of strength as well as those areas you may need to address before students move on. I consider grouping gifted students together for at least part of the school day. I plan for differentiation. Consider pre-assessments, extension activities, and compacting the curriculum. I use phrases like "You've shown you don't need more practice" or "You need more practice" instead of words like "qualify" or "eligible" when referring to extension work. I encourage high-ability students to take on challenges. Gifted students need deeper and more complex assignments so I organize assignments and activities according to this fact.

Amalia Sole, ItalyAn important task of teachers in the school is to be able to recognize students 'talents” and the different types of intelligence. This the main way to help them growing in a bilance personality, If you know the pupils' personal attitudes,you can implement different strategies aimed at improving resources and learnings in cognitive areas, in which students find it more difficult. The interaction between different methods, is fundamental in the didactic actions, adapted to specific contexts and not generically planned a priori
