His main goal was to understand the impact of heredity on physical traits. He was particularly interested in twins, as they had nearly identical DNA, meaning any difference in physical traits would be due to outside influences. He would experiment on pairs of twins, and would then dissect and analyze. their bodies once they had died. He was once in an argument with another doctor about whether a young prisoner had contracted tuberculosis. He walked out of the room he was in and returned hours later, apologizing and saying that he was wrong.
