Josef Mengele, also known as The Angel Of Death, was a German SS Officer during WWII. He performed unethical, and often deadly experiments on prisoners at the concentration camp, Auschwitz. He also chose which prisoners would be put to work, or would be killed immediately upon arrival to Auschwitz.

While at Auschwitz, Mengele started a program to conduct experiments on prisoners. His main goal was to understand the impact of heredity on physical traits. He was particularly interested in twins, as they had nearly identical DNA, meaning any difference in physical traits would be due to outside influences. He would experiment on pairs of twins, and would then dissect and analyze. their bodies once they had died. He went so far as to murder 14 pairs of twins in one night with his experiments.

He performed vivisection (open surgery or dissection of a live patient) on prisoners. He would send the severed body parts of infected victims to be examined in a lab.

Josef Mengele had no qualms about using violence to get his way. He was once in an argument with another doctor about whether a young prisoner had contracted tuberculosis. He walked out of the room he was in and returned hours later, apologizing and saying that he was wrong. He had murdered the child in question, dissected him, and inspected his body for signs of TB, which he in fact did not have.

It was suspected that Josef Mengele was a psychopath, as he showed no signs of empathy for the people he sent to die. According to other officers, Mengele was passionate about his position at Auschwitz, and was glad to fill in for those who did not want to choose where new prisoners were sent. He appeared to sympathize with the children in the concentration camp, but was happy to send them to their deaths, and would often murder them, himself.
