I usually think to give the student "the benefit of the doubt" and hear them out first, but in this case, there is currently a cultural climate of "guilty by association." This may not be the best way to go, but it does publicly highlight the wrong done and provides immediate consequence. I believe our country needs more of this. We need to know that there are consequences for the things we say and do and we need to see organizations following through with said consequence. There is too much slippery slope out there and too many people are getting away "with murder."

I think that when it comes to teenagers and saying or doing inappropriate things the science of the brain of a teenager should be considered. The part of their brain responsible for decision making and understanding the consequences of their actions is not only not developed yet but undergoing many developmental changes. I think these students should be put on some sort of probation to help them understand the consequences of their actions, but I don't think a teenager's life should be potentially ruined because of a mistake that they neurologically couldn't comprehend. This would however strictly be for adolescents undergoing these neurological changes, not for adults.

I do not agree with the college's decision. I think that Alex should have been given a warning and a stern explanation of why this type of behavior is not accepted. He deserved to be given a second chance. We all have been given second chances in life and we have regrets for things we have done or said.

I disagree with the college's decision, however there should be some consequences as a lesson first but not to the extreme of him loosing an admission to college. A warning or probation would have been a good start because they could be wrong on the harsh decision as well.

I do not agree......................If Alex shared this joke privately, then someone leaked it to the college. In this case, I think that he should be given the opportunity to attend this college because this was not meant for public display. He just wanted to fit in with the crowd. Many people have done things privately that may offend others, but if not publicized then it was never addressed. People do make mistakes. The college should give him a chance to explain and then let him know their expectations of him as student.

I understand that Alex did not make the right choice by posting on that online chat. Often times teenagers will do things without thinking as well not thinking of the consequences that follow. Therefore, I do not agree with the college decisions of taking back his admission, however, there should be a consequence to follow. One poor choice or mistake shouldn't ruin the rest of life and/or career. At the end of the day we all make mistakes and should be given a second chance.

Yes, I agree with the college's decision. Young people need to realize that their actions have consequences. You are deter from engaging in certain activities if and only if you know the consequence will have a profound effect upon you. It will give you cause to think. However another course of action might be for Alex to complete a research paper on the said minority group prior to attending the university. This maybe more beneficial in the sense that Alex would gain understanding and maybe empathy for the minorities group.
