When people first arrived at the concentration camps they were stripped of all their possessions. these are the pieces of luggage that people carried with them from the ghettos, onto the trains, and to the entrance of the camps, until they were taken by the Nazis to be used for materials. This was the beginning of their imprisonment.

Much like the luggage that victims carried, their shoes were often times also taken from them, forcing them to go barefoot or to wear the leather or wooden clogs that their captors gave them, leading to many foot injuries, infections, and then death. Even their shoes were made to cause suffering.

After all of their belongings were taken from them. The Jews were given the exact same set of clothes as everyone else and a number. The clothes were never cleaned and likely taken from the last person to die. In this very moment their name and everything about them was taken away from them. All of a sudden they were just another part of the Jewish problem with only a number to identify them.
